Grrrr! Drivers and mobile phones..

I have just got back home after walking my dog across some local fields. To get there I have to cross the A20, whilst waiting for the little man to turn green I counted FIVE people driving and talking on their mobiles. This cavalier attitude to their lives and everyone around them astounds me. It about time the police were able to give out instant two year driving bans along with a pretty hefty fine rather than sixty quid fine and three points. An instant ban on the first offence would surely make these idiot people reconsider the need to talk on their phones whilst driving.

Rant over.

Haven't seen so many doing this lately (watching while waiting for the bus!).

However, a while back I was turning left into the side road at a T-junction and bozo was sitting waiting to turn right on to main road. Holding wheel with right hand and using left to hold phone to right ear. He had the window open. I gave a long blast on hooter as I turned in past him. In mirror saw phone drop to floor - I'd hoped for out of the window - as he looked round in panic :-)

Certainly got his attention back on the road and hopefully he'll think before doing it again. But, as the saying goes, I'm not holding my breath.

I saw someone driving around a busy multi-storey car park this morning with one hand on the wheel and one holding his phone to his ear. I thought that was unbelievably stupid!

I agree there should be bigger penalties, it's such a dangerous and bloody stupid thing to do.

  • I do a lot of motorway driving and it scares the crap out of me to see so many blokes in lorries swerving over line towards me when they're on the phone!
One time, a courier lorry (can't remember the company now) completely cut me up by pulling into my lane without even indicating or looking to see if I was out of his way, I had no choice but to slam the breaks on and swerve onto the hard sholder. It nearly gave me heart failure.
There was an incident a couple of years ago near me, in hampshire, where a woman had stopped in traffic and a lorry had just driven into the back of her, killing her instantly without even braking. All because he was on his phone...

    I've been Money Tipped!
I live on a rural road just after or before a very sharp s bend and a juntion.

Some days i am astounded as person after person negotiates this with a phone. Not so much that they do, and succeed, but that so many do. Its just not seen as 'wrong'' by so many drivers. There is a layby on my road, where a lot of people pull over for lunch (and leave their littergrr) or to make calls, which is sensible. But many, many more drive down the road using their phones.

It's the ones who text while driving that annoy me more - at least those talking on the phone are watching the road (usually!)

I shall never understand why it's so hard for people just to switch their phones off while they're driving. I've phoned customers from work and said "is it okay to speak to you for a moment?" and they've replied "well no, I am driving you know." I always want to ask them why they answered their phone then but of course I'm not allowed to be rude to customers :D.

Doesn't matter how big the fine or how many points - if there are no police around to see them commit the offence, there is no deterrent! Very few police on the roads round here. :(

  • It's a shocking, selfish attitude that pervades the culture and society of the UK today.

I find it completely unacceptable that people do take such a slack attitude to their own and other peoples lives.
