you have multiple options in Android
my machines rooted,so I can perform a full back up within the phone
pictures auto upload to photobucket(or whatever your choice)
contacts (and many settings) are synced on the google account anyway
etc etc0 -

I guess if you use iTunes anyway, it's no hardship (and probably easier).0 -

How do you do a full device backup without having to mess on with the phone?0 -

For a Samsung phone, KIES. It's their own software. Backs up everything you mentioned or doubletwist0 -

Are you using the desktop software that comes with the handset?
My SE have always had software to back up to a PC , sync, transfer pics, music etc.
The HTC has similar too, I would be surprised if these were the only two brands that include software.0 -

I have an iPhone, I'm just wondering how it's done with Android devices. I really like that when I get a new iPhone I can simply restore from backup and it restores all my data and settings to exactly how I like it. Does it do the same with Android devices?0 -

Yes, when I got my Ray after having a Satio, the software loaded the contacts without having to use Outlook, and even the picture cards were transferred too, Sony Media Go works similar to itunes, put a CD in , it copies and converts and quickly loads onto the device and fetches the artwork (more often than itunes to be honest even on cotia CDs)
I'm surprised thegoodman has not confirmed that as he claims to have a device for each platform.0 -
I like Galxy S2 as compared to i Phone 4s.0

So just to be clear, it'll restore all my settings, apps, folders, preferences etc, as if I were simply using the same phone? What happens if I change from an HTC to a Samsung? How do I get it to do the same full restore?0 -

I would imagine some restores would not occur eg ringtones as they maybe unique to the handset brand, as for the apps googleplay would do that part, but having an apple device and android and symbian, I'm not sure why some are debating over which one not to get, there will be folk who prefer apple and those that prefer other offerings for whatever reasons they choose, it may not be price alone, as for some it is not for lack of funds to purchase , just the desire is not there (for me) widgets and notification bar are what appeal to me,never had any issues with malware which thegoodman refers to.0
