Regional Pay

So, the tories want to introduce regional pay! Outrageous
I'll be doing exactly the same job as someone in England for less money. I don't think so.
If I'm getting less pay, I'll have to seriously consider doing less work too - I trust the unions will get to work on this one. Hopefully Osbourne is only testing the water and isn't actually serious about this hair-brained idea.
Rant over, anyone got any thoughts?

This is just a few days after the MLAs where given a pay rise so bad timing but I am in favour of anything that means I pay less tax or rates .
I think the public sector here is well paid compared to the private sector .

National pay suits national costs of living and national market forces.

For example Nurses in the South of England need many more multiples of salary to get on the housing ladder than they would if living in the North of England.

It is easier to persuade healthcare staff to relocate to the South of England from abroad, than from the North of England to the South, as the cost of living is perceived as too high.

I don't particularly agree with the public sector attitude that people employed to do the same job should be paid the same. Two teachers with the same number of years experience get paid the same, but one could be an exceptional teacher an another just doing the bare minimum. Also one subject could mean a greater volume of preparation or marking (like English, where a teacher has to mark 30 essays per class vs art where the marking process does not take the same amount of work).

Welcome to the world of the private sector, where for years people in NI have been paid less than those in England.

It sounds like another public sector perk bubble is about to burst, just like the generous pensions they've enjoyed for so long.

.......... and the next stage will no doubt be 'regional benefits' & 'regional old age pensions'. I wonder how many public sector bashers will support it then?

Let's face it - if Sammy Wilson (well known for his support of the working classes & his socialist principles?) thinks it's ludicrous - says it all really.

Of course - it could have the opposite effect here given that we pay more for our services (insurance etc), fuel (& consequently food etc). power etc.

(It could, but you can rest assured it won't!)

Ok, if they cut your pay or pension etc, you will be paying less tax then. You in favour of that?

All these snide remarks about public sector pay, which is already reducing in real terms because of pay freezes, pension contribution increase, inflation, etc etc. So if their pay reduces further in real terms, this will reduce their amount of cash to spend to keep shops open and will have a very definite impact in the long term. People should seriously look at the bigger picture.

I work in the real world not the state sponsored one . The civil service here is masive and needs to be cut .Sammy and the rest off the folks on the hill need to realise they cant maintain it in its present form forever .In the real world /private sector they use call centres in India perhaps its time the government did the same .

Private sector workers have also had to endure:

    (a) pay freezes (a couple of years ago I had to work a four day week, and haven't had a pay rise for three years)
    (b) final salary pension schemes closing
    (c) inflation, just like everyone else

So I can't see how you can make out the public sector is alone in all of this - both public and private sectors have had to endure tough times, with both sectors having real-term pay reductions.

As I said previously, welcome to the world of the private sector.
