Or it could be a push to move some of the public sector jobs to other areas and stop being so Belfast focused. I know there were plans afoot to do this a few years ago.

Would be good for other areas of the province Derry, Omagh and the Northwest in general).

This would lower demand even further on Greater Belfast prices and give a much needed boost to the Northwest. Obviously doesn't work for "demand led" public services but would for back office staff. I was reading there’s lots of vacant space in Derry lots of it owned by the public having paid for it through InvestNI.

...alas, the same logic would suggest encouraging decentralising public services from the overheated south east of England out to the regions.

Instead, their proposal to reduce regional civil service wages may well accelerate this flow of people into the south east of England.

Dept of Agriculture will be moving from Stormont to Cookstown in 2015, or shortly thereafter.

If there's a Portadown subtraction, then the same logic would suggest that there should also be a Belfast weighting to reflect its higher house prices.

Where would it stop, the whole idea opens a Pandora's box of local disputes to resolve.

Not really. You simply pay whatever is necessary to fill the position. I don't think that would be very different between Portadown and Belfast but it probably would be between Belfast and Enniskillen.
Returning to the general argument about regional pay, last time the PSNI recruited there were 50 applicants for each place. Could it be that police officers are paid more than is necessary to attract suitable candidates?

Regional pay is just a backdoor to reduce the block grant. So you want the block grant cut?

If you're asking me, the answer is yes. Who wants to be a beggar?

    + 100

We need to develop private productive wealth creating enterprise instead of looking for the scraps London chooses throws us.

And maybe if the country hadn't been blown to pieces for over 30 years we might have had a thriving economy, but we don't.

Over that period of time very few international companies would touch us with a bargepole, unless they got enormous financial inducements.

So yes, we are very much dependent on the block grant for the foreseeable future.

You are quite right the 170,000 on DLA and 70,000 ESA are a result of the troubles.
