Osborne plans lower public sector salaries outside of the south

I'd actually go much further than having localised pay deals. I'd go right down to specific workplaces. Every single school, hospital, town hall, etc., should be completely free to offer whatever pay and conditions deal they think fit to get the calibre of staff they need - no more no less. That's exactly how it works in the private sector where there are massive differences between employers in the same town, let alone different regions.
This already happens - they're called Academy schools.0 -

I don't live in the south east.
Teachers according to the BBC this week get around 80% of the pay of those in other sectors with the same qualifications.
Does this mean I get a pay rise to match the private sector then? I suspect not! They won't compare with private schools will they, just the average wage in an area. Morale is very low and many teachers are aiming to get out of the UK or state system as soon as they can (50% of staff according to my union's latest survey). Teacher training is again failing to recruit sufficient graduates...
This is quite interesting, because private sector teachers are paid considerably more than public sector teachers with the same experience.
Are the government really going to increase salaries for teachers to match pay in this sector?0 -
That's because nobody wants to live there.
They're missing out, some parts are beautiful. Northumberland for example. If they want to move north and take advantage of the cheap houses, nobody's stopping them.
If they have a job in the south & relocating it is not possible then clearly something is stopping them. Try again, see if you can come up with something even a bit sensible.0 -
No they are not going to raise salaries because they are frozen until 2014 anyway! In their grand scheme of reducing public pay by freezing it until it comes into line with private sector pay they seem to have forgotten they have done that already.
By the way my friends with degrees who work in the private sector seem to have bigger houses and better holidays than I do! Wonder why?0 -

Is it because in a recent post you demonstrated that you don't even know whether or not you paid PPI, how much you might be "owed"? Or what spam is?0 -

Are you seriously claiming that 50% of teachers are about to pack their job in?
Where else will they find employment?
http://www.uswitchforbusiness.com/press-room/press-releases/poor-perception-of-public-sector-workers-puts-small-businesses-off-employing-them-1885.pdf55% of SME owners believe that public sector workers have unrealistic expectations about pay, holidays and employment terms while just 11% consider public sector workers to be as productive as private sector employees.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-12521580The survey found that 57% of companies said they were not interested in former state employees, with 52% saying it was because they believed these workers were "not equipped" for a job in their business.Nothing is foolproof, as fools are so ingenious!0 -
Osbornes move will create further inequalities and increase the north south divide.
Why doesnt this government start looking at ways to inject some action into the economy and start investing in this country instead of cutting spending. I know we need to save money but the disenfranchised are (as always) left behind. The poor in society are demonised and blamed as it is cheaper to do this than actually help them. Rich get richer, poor get poorer ... same old same old.
Next on the agenda, to cut the 50p tax band...why?

They pay more because they live and die on their results. They will pay a premium for the best teachers, to keep the fees rolling in.
Market conditions force them to employ only the best teachers.simongregson wrote: ».....been for a job interview in a private school recently....... Sadly didn't get the job
