  • You can make the flat a little warmer if you buy draft excluder strips to fit in doors and you can pop some sticky tape over the worst gaps on the windows. Or you could buy some cling film and tape that over the windows. Surprising what can be done to help.
I too have the pre pay meter key, but I choose to have that as I like to control my usage and not have sudden direct debits hit my bank account. I get it as I am on Income related ESA.

British Gas will be sending barcoded letters that you take to the Post office to get your £135 credited to your key. All payments should be made by 31.3.2014.

  • This scheme can only be added to the electricity account not your GAS. It will either be added as a credit on the quarterly bill, or you go to the paypoint for your key and it gets added there(letter & ID needed) or it will be taken off any debt you owe on your fixed deal account.
Only people on state pension/pension credit get it before December as they get it automatically. Anyone else gets it after that in the quarterly cycle after Christmas upto March 31st 2014. These are the facts. So if you are not in the former group - expect your letter after Christmas 2013.

We don't automatically qualify, applied as we are in the broader group with eon and I received my payment 5 weeks ago

Quarterly customers see it by March because that's when they get their bill but that's not necessarily the date when they get it and it could be on the December bill. Such customers should get a letter from their energy provider informing them that they have/will receive it. The effect is the same whether prepayment customers get it by December 31st or quarterly customers get it by March 31st since prepayment customers pay in advance and quarterly customers pay in arrears.

Yes it's only available for electricity but pension / pension credit recipients who get it automatically should in addition get the £200 winter fuel payment as well as cold weather payments.
  • I'm in receipt of income related ESA (WRAG) and DLA but Scottish Power have advised me I don't qualify because the account is not in my name? I have just taken over the tenancy from my mother and all the bills are in my fiance's name. Scottish power said to change it to my name and qualify for the warm home discount (despite it stating on their website "anyone in the household in receipt of qualifying benefits") have advised I need to send a copy of a utility bill in my name which due to my condition I don't have any because my fiance is my carer and is responsible for paying all the bills.

Any advice on what I should do? We are on prepayment meters for both Gas and electricity and cannot afford to spend this much to get us through winter so warm home discount would help a great deal!
    Thanks:)
  • Just get the electic bill changed so that both your names are on it. Your fiance can do this as he is the bill payer. Quite simple. Once your name is on that account then they can authorise payment to you. It matters not who pays it.

    im a bit confused.
if your partner lives with you ( and why else would the bill be in their name?), and you receive income related benefits ....
then your partner must receive income based benefit too ( one joint claim) and so would be entitled to the whd anyway?

I think the rule is that if your partner is entitled to WHD and the electricity account is in their name they get WHD. If a someone qualifies for WHD but the electricity account is in the name of a partner who doesn't qualify for WHD they don't get WHD.
  • Sorry they can't change the name from my mums to mine because I have no utility bills in my name
