" Do you have to remove them? Does this make for better growth?"
The story goes that if you remove the flowers on first year plants, then the plant will produce considerably more fruit the following years. (Jam tomorrow). I must admit that I always do this even though I haven't got the willpower to quit smoking but I always take runners every year so that I have a succession of new plants. Sorry if this sounds a bit anorakish.
"The only drawback may be pollination, you could leave door open on sunny days [and hope squirels leave them, or go round with a small paint brush when in flower"
I had this prob with free range "pet" rabbits who took a liking to my tomatoes and vines but overcame it by making a door out of plastic netting which I secured to the entrance when the glass door was open. I had to reinforce the bottom foot with wire netting as plastic was no match for their teeth.0 -

The reason for nipping off the flowers when first planted out is so that the plant can concentrate all it's energy into producing good root stock rather than flowers/fruit.“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0

Hi guys & gals I went into my local Lidl today, and wow...I got a rhododendron (red) for £4.99 well grown in its own pot quite big really very healthy and the cheapest I have ever paid...not only that I got 2 (red) heather's very healthy too for £1.29 each...2 silver dust 59p each a skimmia japonica bush for £2.49 the last one of those I bought cost me £8.99 from a flower shop...2 (white) roses for £1.29 each and a pack of (red) bulbs £2.49 with a mixture of 5 different bulbs...I wanted to have a colour themed corner border type theme...which is a corner of the garden that I have been sorting out for afew years getting it weed free and well cultivated so now its ready to plant so have gone for the red and white theme so for £16.31 I have got everything I need to fill a small corner of the garden and make it into a themed border...I also have 2 rose border's either side of this corner...so that's where the white rose's are going to be...either side of the red themed corner...not bad for the price really...
so get yourself into your local Lidl and see which bargains you can pick up...I can't wait to get into the garden tomorrow and the rest of the weekend...wow...this will keep me busy for afew days...
enjoy...
Ice...xx
