  • Saw the flyer for the ones in Aldi and was interested because it said that there were 4 varieties and the harvest was spread over the year but I could not make out what the 4 varieties were. One of them was honeyoye, got some of these from Wilko last year. Has anybody bought any and could they enlighten me please ?. It's a bit of a jaunt to my "local" Aldi and would involve a large carbon footprint not to many another tenner in the tank.
    Many thanks.

One of the Aldi ones is Pegasus.

Wilkos are also selling 3 for £1.50 and have a couple of different varieties. I got the Elsanta ones as it was a name I recognised lol ;)

Yep, but they're loose in a bag that get knocked around a bit, and also little more than runners. On the plus side, they're usually available before Aldi and Lidl start doing their potted ones. I'm doing a little comparison this year between all 3 - the Wilko ones I had went in about a month before, are now a little behind and about 3 out of 9 suffered from damage in the bag.

Managed to sweet talk a colleague into doing a small detour on his way home from work on Monday and pop into Aldi for me. The Honeyoye were covered in flowers when I got them on Tuesday and it was a real test of willpower for me to remove them. The Honeyoye which I had from Wilkinsons last year aren't showing any signs of flowering yet, probably due to the weather here (W. Mids) although I have them in a greenhouse.
I was trying to get a few different varieties on the go in an effort to extend the season and increase my binge slurping opportunies. :D

I also bought the strawbs from lidl this time last year, and they are just springing back into life in the pots and troughs after winter. they produced lovely, sweet fruits last year, and I would thoroughlly recommend them. looking forward to more this year!

Can I grow them in a greenhouse, we have a lot of squirrels come into our garden and think they would eat them all up!

Also can they go in an unheated greenhouse

 Do you have to remove them? Does this make for better growth?

Yes they can be grown in unheated greenhouse, no problems

The only drawback may be pollination, you could leave door open on sunny days [and hope squirels leave them, or go round with a small paint brush when in flower

I have squirels in my garden, they do not eat mine, but they need netting to keep the birds off anyway

Strawberries are every animals favourite, birds, slugs, if it moves it eats strawberries::D
