on our wedding day he gave me the sextant - a really beautiful one perfect for my small hands and said it was for when we sailed away with our kids.

^That is so sweet and touching! I reckon you must be very happy together and I hope you have/had the kids and sailing trip sooner rather than later.

As for the OP, belfastgirl23 has it spot on in my opinion.

Me too, never heard of this "new" tradition. And I only married four years ago.

Another vote here for 'never heard of it':(.

You're giving, supposedly:cool:, a lifetime's commitment. What does some trinket add to that?

My DH bought me a dressy watch, as he knew I'd want to wear one on the day to make sure he turned up on time! He also bought me a bottle of a very expensive perfume that I wear on special occasions :)

I bought him an engraved silver plectrum and gave him the cufflinks that my mother gave to my father on their wedding day.

I've heard of it although it's not something that me and my husband bothered with. It's quite sweet I suppose, but I can't help thinking it's rather unnecessary.

OP, if you're planning on having kids, why not do the present thing then? Frankly, it's a lot harder work pushing a human out your mooer than it is wearing a pretty frock and drinking champagne all day. :D

It has to be something really personal and meaningful imho.

I had little money and did a photo montage for OH for significant events of our relationship. He bought me the most wonderful piece of jewellery that wasn't pricey but was just absolutely perfect and showed so much thought and attention.

When i married my ex husband, the morning of our wedding day he sent up a gift for me with his sister. It was just a simple gold chain for my wrist.

6 years and one divorce later on the morning of my wedding day my future husband gave to me a simple gold chain for my wrist.

Since my future husband had know idea that my ex had given me the same type of gift 6 years previously i was somewhat shocked.

If you want to buy her a gift, i'd go for a simple peice of jewellery.

I bought my husband a watch to wear on our wedding day....to make sure he got there on time. :rotfl:

It was a watch that he'd wanted for a while, so it seemed the perfect present.

He got me a £50 voucher to use at my favourite tattoo studio. :j

I think that the charm bracelet idea is good, then you can buy her a new charm on your anniversary.
