I work in a charity shop and every year we get loads of Mums coming in looking for costumes for World book Day-I wish the schools would give parents more notice .
  • I think the principle behind WBD is sometimes lost with us parents in our eagerness to ensure our children "keep up with their peers".

I am trying to encouage my 2 to think about it properly. What is their favourite books, which are the characters they like and why do they like them. What is the story about and what is the part of their character that they like? Its difficult to avoid trying to make them look the best but what is important is that they know their character, what part in the book or story they play and why they like that character....its about encouraging them to read and this is a fun day.

My DD is 6 and wants to be feleicity wishes, when i asked why she says because she is clumsy but she is nice too, she helps everybody and she gets a happy ending because she helps and is nice ......awwwwwww - good principles for life hey!

Thankfully dressing up as a fairy is not so difficult, pink everything! We might have to source some wings because we cannot find the old ones but cardboard cutouts might have to do!

    Good luck
    Oh how I dream............
  • I know that this will not be any help to the o/p but my son doesnt have to dress up till Thursdays and he wanted to go as captain underpants. So I went to town and bought some y fronts (25p) and went into matalan and bought 2 white t shirts (£2.00) then I stitched the y fronts onto the outside of him jogging bottoms and got o/h to write captain underpants on the t shirt. Then I cut up an old red t shirt and sewed it onto the back of the t shirt. The end result is really good even though i say so myself all for £1.25.

  • Hi. last year my daughter went as Cat in the Hat, she already had a cat costume from halloween and we made a big red and white top hat, and added a big red bibbon around the neck. Easy but effective.
Good luck, I hate these costume days lol

My daughter's boyfriend is a teacher and he was showing us his outfit for World Book day at the weekend. He's going as Willy Wonka...black top hat (from joke shop but you could make one from cereal packet) comedy glasses, two big white paper circle frames stuck over old sunglasses, a cane (rolled up paper and coloured with felt pens) charity shop longish ladies jacket (or one of yours) and dark trousers, he looked brilliant.
  • Fluff - believe it or not it actually was his idea, at first i thought oh no he cant wear that he will be too cold, because he only wears his red cape and underpants but i modified it so he will be warm. My son wont mind at all he likes that kind of thing. He does tap dancing and he is 10 it doesnt bother him one bit, he was in a show and he was charlie from charlie and the choc factory and he was billy elliott, although he did draw the line at wearing a tu-tu :rotfl:

I too am struggling for ideas for my son's Book Day fancy dress on Friday. His has to be a nursery rhyme character. I've had a couple of ideas but nothing that i think is really original and easy!!
