Gosh I remember having to do this with two days notice and not much time! My younger daughter had decided she wanted to be a dalmatian (as in 101 Dalmatians - yes I know it's a film but there is a book or two). We used white blouse and tights with painted on spots, face painting and can't remember the hat/head dress but I'd go for tights or old t-shirt with spots and black ears. It was quick to do and looked good.

Only trouble was I/we got the wrong day and she dressed that way a day early! Fortunately she's not shy so was quite chuffed that everyone else was in uniform and she was in fancy dress!

We still tell the story now (about 7 years later).

Goldilockes is dead easy for a blonde girl. Pretty dress possible an apron. A mixing bowl and a wooden spoon.

My two children (girl age 6 boy age 3) have to dress up as a character for world book day next week, so I have a week to find/ make a cheap costume and I am all out of ideas.

I considered for my boy, Harry Potter, but he is a bit little for glasses, fake or otherwise. I don't really consider spiderman to be a book character (as much as he likes him) and the outfits all seem very expensive. I thought about maybe trying to make a gruffallo outfit, but honestly don't know if he would wear it.

I have no ideas for my daughter. All the "princess" type outfits she had in the past she has outgrown and again new ones seem very expensive.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Thx

I'm afraid I look at what we have in the house, both in the dressing up and general clothes and then decide which character fits- lazy but it works:rotfl:

Got some really scruffy, outgrown clothes? Make them even tattier and you have Oliver Twist or, With a !golden ticket" Charlie Bucket from Charlie and the Chocolate factory.

Did you buy a shirt and tie for a smart occaision recently? Really smarm his hair down and make him very tiday and you have "perfect Peter" ftom the Horrid henry books.

If you son is small and cute then shorts, a check shirt , a sun hat and wellies (muted colours) and a Pooh bear will make hin Christopher Robin.

For your daughter- cute stripy tights and plaits in her hair (denim skirt, colourful top?) and you havd Pippi Longstocking. Got a kilt or plaid skirt (we have one thar DD1 was given),wolly jumper and wellies- one of my favourie book characters of all times "katie- Morag McColl" from the fantastic Katie -Morag books (lok for them if you haven't got them!).

Sophie from the Sophie books is easy too- jeans, wellies, bit of mud, messy hair and a "very determined" expression- most small girls can do that so well!

I never buy outfits and generaly avoid Harry Potter as the whole school will be full of them!

I always read the books that they are representing with the kids too so they know who they are!
Bit of crossdressing is OK too- DD1 went as "charlie" one year.

Made my then receptionj DD2s day when she wandered in in kilt and wellies to be greated by the TA with a "Well hello Katie-Morag" :T

The easiest outfit I ever made for my daughter was The Little Princess ( Tony Ross - "I want my Potty" books) Adult white T shirt and a crown made from yellow card. It looked great!

Last year my son wore his Dad's Guinness T shirt with a couple of old CDs sewn on - Guinness Book of Records!

THe Little Princess, how totally wonderful!

I did my son up as one of the lost boys from peter pan last year.
Ripped jeans big belt bandana, dirty face etc.
It was really easy and very effective.
I was extremely annoyed however, when a child dressed as a bee from that well known book NOT bee movie won!!!!!!!!
And the costume was bought!!!! (not that there's anything wrong with buying it just felt aggreived).
I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.

After a last minute panic last week I sent my boys as James and the Giant Peach and charlie and the chocolate factory.

For James (my son's namesake!), I cut two huge peach shapes out of carboard and cover them with peach poster paper. I made them into a sandwich board by joining them together with red ribbon. I then doodled the main characters from the story on the peach.

For charlie we went with some old clothes and made a few oversized wonka bars and lollies from card, foil and pipe cleaners. I printed a golden ticket from the internet.

    They both won :D.
