Dress him in a dressing gown and slippers and he can be Arthur Dent from Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy.

    How old is he?

We managed one Harry Potter (scar drawn on in eyeliner pencil, wand made of stick from garden) and one Paddington (winter duffle coat, luggage lable saying 'please look after this bear' etc. Drew the line at marmalade sandwiches under his hat).

The trick is to reduce any character you can think of to two or three instantly recognisable attributes. Christopher Robin? Wellies, shorts, bear under his arm. Julian from the famous five? casual clothes (not too trendy), sausage roll & bottle of pop, tendency to say 'gosh'. Jennings? School cap, muddy knees, shouts of 'fossilised fish-hooks'. Horrid Henry? Stripey t-shirt, sign on his back that says 'don't be horrid'.

  • How about a blue and yellow striped jumper, messy hair and a Jeans. Add a couple of plastic spiders crawling out the pocket and you have horrid henry

    where's Wally,,,
Or Hagrid, might be easy to do @ home
  • one of my ds's went as james and the giant peach - just painted a giant peach with a few of the insects on card and cut it out. He dressed as sort of old fashioned school boy ie shorts and tshirt. could also be charlie and the chocolate factory - ragged clothes and carrying a chocolate bar with a golden ticket. :)

I was meant to dress up as a school girl for a hen nigh a few weeks ago, but it's not really me so I went to the material shop(i can't spell the proper name and bought a metre and a half of black material and mde some cuts where the arms went, you would only need half a metre for a child and it cost me £1.50 and hey presto-he's a wizard!
Oh....I'm not going to lie to you......At the end of the day, when alls said and done......do you know what I mean.........TIDY

Oliver Twist - cut an old pair of grey school pants - and an old shirt, a flat cap and as a spoon. My son wouldn't do it though - he didn't want to take a spoon! He went as Horrid Henry in the end.

My two children (girl age 6 boy age 3) have to dress up as a character for world book day next week, so I have a week to find/ make a cheap costume and I am all out of ideas.

I considered for my boy, Harry Potter, but he is a bit little for glasses, fake or otherwise. I don't really consider spiderman to be a book character (as much as he likes him) and the outfits all seem very expensive. I thought about maybe trying to make a gruffallo outfit, but honestly don't know if he would wear it.

I have no ideas for my daughter. All the "princess" type outfits she had in the past she has outgrown and again new ones seem very expensive.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Thx

World book day is in March! Why is your school doing it so late/early?

How about Horrid Henry or Just William for your little boy? Does he have any dressing up outfits which could work - pirate for Captain Hook, Peter Pan/Robin Hood type thing maybe. Cowboy outfit for Shane?

For your little girl, if she has long hair, Pippi Longstocking. Or buy a cheap red piece of material/tablecloth or something and make a cloak for little red riding hood. White top and trousers with black paper spots stuck on to be one of the 101 dalmations? If you have an old compass or suitable sized clock, she could go in fairly normal clothes and be Lyra from Northern Lights (Golden Compass)
