Good morning - o.k let's see if we can help :D

First of all at the moment monthly Royalties fee is £6 - used to be £5 and Royalties Gold is now £12 and used to be £10, they also do Royalties fee of £15 per month. If your Mum downgraded her account part way through that months charging period she would have had her monthly fee adjusted accordingly for the time she still had the packaged account.

A referral charge is when an item is paid and it takes you in excess of your overdraft by more than £25 or if you don't have an overdraft facility then in excess of £25 unauthorised borrowing. Items like switch and guaranteed cheques and direct debits are paid etc. A referral charge at the moment is £30 per item to a maximum of £90 per month. These charges are applied on the 6th business day of the following month. RBS say they can not inform you of these charges as they don't know if the items will be paid or returned unpaid at the time. Lots of factors are taken into account when this is done but normally speaking an account that doesn't have regualr charges etc may get items paid for a couple of months before they start being bounced and unpaid charges then get applied.

Hope that explains it to you. All branches have an up to date charges and rates of interest leaflet, it may be worth picking one up as it is very easy to read and understand ;) Good luck sorting things out.
Love my job in the bank and am proud to say that, however I only do what is right for the customer no matter what, probably why I am on top of customer service nominations by my customers :A
  • Hi there

You only get charged £28 for going overdrawn the rest of the charge must be made up of your £6 royalties account service fee. this £6 charge you can't claim back. If in excess of your overdraft by more than £25 or in excess of unauthorised borrowing ie no overdraft then you may be liable for referral charges of £30 per item paid up to a maximum of £90 per month so check and see if any items were honoured for you - remember though if you issued switch or used chq guarantee card then bank obliged to pay them

    hope that helps

Right i called my bank, and they told me that i made 2 switch payments on 2 separate days apparently this fell fell between 2 service charge periods hence the 2 charges. They have given me 1 charge back but refused the other.

Do you think i could write the official letter and try for the second charge as well?

    Thanks

    hi little bear

thanks so much for the reply it helps enormously.

maybe you or anyone else could help me a little more, her first monthly fee back in Feb 2001 was £20 (within the 6 years reclaimable) she was however £1529.83dr and at the top of the statement it just says "royalties". unfortunatly she can't remember what her o/d limit was at that time.

In April she went on to receive a £20 referral charge for march.

was the monthly fee for royalties also £5 back in march 2001 do you know?

any insight to these charges would be greatfully received

Yes indeed write your letter, however they may try to say the first charge was a gesture of goodwill either way it will have to be referred to a higher level as branch managers are only allowed to refund a certain amount so if it was me I would go for it and send in a letter ;) Good luck

    Hi Nel
my thinking cap hurts quite a bit now hee hee but if my memory serves me correctly the Royalties fee was £5 in 2001 but I can not be 100% sure. Have you requested the last 6 years statements? You could do with finding out what the overdraft facility was on the account as that will give an indication to the interest being charged - obviously you can't claim back overdraft interest. Referral charges ect you can claim back. The charges for going overdrawn have changed over the last few years and I can't remember them all plus referral charge amounts too have changed. All you can do is get the statements and go through them and look for charges on them o.k Sorry I can't be more help but please don't be afraid to call your branch and ask them if there is anyway you can find out about past overdraft limits ;)

    thanks one again little bear

the one thing ido have is the statements, mum never through them out fortunately, i'll contact the bank on monday and i'll post a list f what they say the charges were at different times and maybe this will help others too.....the thing is RBOS do seem to tend to clump charges together....maybe somebody had a preminition that one day people would be reclaiming so they thought they would make life complicated!!

And on the 8th day God created the Banker.......to make life complicated:D
  • Hi everyone

I'm new to this so please bear with me. I'm so ashamed! I've just got through my bank statement from RBoS from 2001 - 2003 and the total comes to £3468.88. Where do I send my next letter to to request the money back.

    Thanks
    Jill
