Not sure if you know but the 2014 thread is running here: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3833381
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....
  • hey, another 2014 bride here! We're aiming for February 2014. Would love to be the 18th as it would mark two years since our engagement but nothing booked yet.

Sorry to start with a moan but is anyone else already feeling stressed with it all? I've realised there's only 18 months to go which is a long time but then we haven't even got any money saved and I feel like a bit of a fraud going to wedding fairs when we don't really have any money to put down. I'm scared we'll miss out. And I'm kind of annoyed with our families reaction, no-one seems that bothered about it. My sister's are going to be my bridesmaids but when I try talking about it they go off into what they will have at their imaginary weddings. I don't want to turn into a bridezilla but at the same time I wish they cared a bit more. Am I being too sensitive about it?

I'm hoping this thread will calm me down and help me enjoy the fun of it!

    Hi Ella,

    Welcome and congratulations.

Luckily I had savings so that was my half of the wedding sorted and my h2b was made redundant in April so his redundancy money is covering his half (he got a job straight away luckily) Most things you can DIY like invitations, favours, place cards etc etc you need to work out how much you can save between now and then, but please bare in mind that venues get booked up pretty early.

I know how you feel about people not being bothered, we got engaged on christmas day (3 years this year) we never got a single card or anything. My h2b's mum got engaged on the same day and stole our thunder, I've got pretty much everything sorted just the odd few things now, luckily not many people are asking me how the wedding planning is going so I'm not too stressed. Being organised is a good thing.

I've only been to one wedding fayre last october people scoffed at us when we said 2014, I have since pretty much booked everything without going to a wedding fayre it's mainly over the internet, you get some good deals if you look around enough.

But do be careful about who your booking there are some scammers out there.

Congratulations to everyone - we have an exciting 2014 to look forward to! Glad I came across this post - have been lurking on various wedding threads trying to get ideas and glad I've found an insurance supplier which others are using and would recommend (didn't even know where to start with that one)

Got engaged in May this year and have got our date set for 24th May 2014, with the venue all booked with deposit paid (thankfully it is low enough that it will still be covered by the insurance). Booking it this early meant the hire was frozen at this years rates, the food cost will go up in accordance with how food costs are at the time which is fair enough. The venue is amazing, and they charge the same rate no matter what day or month you get married as they offer the same service... and knew I was onto a good thing when I emailed asking about hire of chair covers and their response was "we can do it but these companies are far more competitive"!!

SIL to be is a hairdresser and bridesmaid so hoping she'll agree to do that, MIL makes amazing cakes and we've asked her to do the cake, and flowers will be me buying artificial ones and arranging them myself! An old school friend is in photography and she said she'll be able to offer 'mates rates' for the photography, so hopefully that will save some money!

Dress I have no idea, but need some time to get some money behind me as I don't want to fall in love with something and not be able to afford it! H2B has decided on the suit he wants we just need to find them in sale times. Not sure where to start with the table decorations as there are so many options... favours will be a jar of retro sweets on the table that the guests can fight over! I know how we want our invites but waiting til a little nearer the time to make them, and as we've ordered so early we have some save the dates too (business card size fridge magnets which I love!), and we got them cheap on a deal so only paying postage from vistaprint. Having the day all in one place so no transport costs, more than happy to turn up with my parents in their car :)

    Is there anything I'm missing?!

Rings i always forget about.. Haven't given that much thought really, just nice simple silver bands for each of us i think. Hoping i won't need to get a special ring made to go round my ring like sister in law had to! Entertainment will be hiring some speakers and lights from somewhere hopefully, taking a laptop and getting a spotify day pass (99p i think which makes it advert free!) and letting guests choose their own music. Not sure exactly yet how this will work - with alcohol and one of our laptops Im reluctant to leave it unattended but don't want someone feeling like they have to sit there all night babysitting it. If the internet goes down we're downloading a whole load of different music that we listen to anyway so guests can choose from that... just in case the internet packs up!

  • Got engaged on the 21st of this month looking at an August 2014 wedding, been looking at things and started saving, got a budget of around 10k but would like it to be less but if its more its not a problem.

I want us to be realistic but not have to go without anything important i.e. if we budget 1000 for something and there is something she really wants for 1200 it wont be a problem but if its 5000 tough lol

Dont want to get into any debt so it will be a matter of saving :)

Got a few magazines, brochures, dates for wedding fayres and had a look at a lot of websites but any tips or really good sites would be much appreciated.
