Anyone having a 2014 wedding?

304 Posts

I know it's a bit early, but I just wondered if anyone else is planning things slowly.
I've been engaged for about a month, been with my OH for four years, and we're having to slowly save up for everything, we're having to wait about 2 years, so we can get enough cash together. Even with loads of time to go, I'm still researching loads, to find what I want, for the price thats affordable. Trying to be a mse as possible.
I'm sure I'll calm down soon, anyone else go nuts when they first got engaged?

Ours is about a 20 month gap and we wasted no time sorting things out. I was at a wedding fayre last month and there were plenty of people there booking things for 2014.
3 great things about having a while before the big day;
1 - as you said, plenty of time to save.
2 - a lot of suppliers will offer to 'freeze' their prices at 2012/2013 prices for you.
3 - you get your pick of all the best venues / suppliers nice and early.
Don't be fooled into thinking you've got all the time in the world though ... it'll soon fly!
Oh, and congratulations of course! :T

Firstly, congratulations! I'm not 'officially' engaged yet but planning a summer 2013 wedding, and I went crazy a couple of months ago when my OH ordered the ring! Part of me wishes we had longer to save, but with other plans next year is best for us. Hopefully the ring will be ready later this week and we can make it official!
So far I've bought 2 bridesmaid dresses (absolute bargain 2nd hand on a wedding forum - the EXACT ones I'd been looking at and loving!), have ordered samples of card (yes, I know, wedding stationary won't be needed until next year!) and have been scouring wedding magazines and forums - especially this one! I'm normally more of a 'lurker' and read other peoples posts, and try and help where I can!
I went to a big wedding fayre yesterday in the town I'm getting married, and a lot of the companies were there trying to sell themselves, and a lot of them were giving discounts if you booked as a result of seeing them there. If you started looking early, you might be able to secure some costs at this years or next years prices? But make sure you have insurance before you book anything though, just in case a company goes under!
Good luck with it all!

We're having a long engagement; 28 months. We didn't really do any planning for the first 6 months or so though, and then were very laid back about finding venues for a few months after that.
It gives you time to think about what you really want at your wedding, as well as time to do any DIY elements that you want. We've pretty much sorted all the big stuff now, so we've got the next six months to do all the pretty stuff.
The only warning note I would give is to not let the amount of time you have allow you to keep second-guessing yourself after you've booked things; it's very easy to do. Once you've booked something, stop looking at other options, or you'll get venue/dress/theme envy!
Have a great time planning!
The right to express an opinion does not override the responsibility to show respect.
Definitely very good advice here... the only pitfall we have found with being prepared far in advance is after a few months or so you start to question if you really have found the perfect place etc. - but ultimately you would not have booked it if you didnt and wehave found going back for a visit to the venue has resparked our love with it
Yes I'm having a 2014 wedding. Mine's been in the planning for the last 2 years though as we wanted to wait until he's out of the army next year and I get far too excited about things.
I think the best thing about having the extra time is that you can choose at leisure what you want to have and plenty of time to change your mind plus it gives you a lot of time to haggle and find bargains.
:j I no longer skinny dip, I chunky dunk :j
The venue reduced their deposit to just £50 to book the date, the remaining £100 deposit I can pay once I have my insurance in place - they were very good about it and understood my reasons.
The church was only £50 deposit as well.
I am overly excited about the whole thing and cant wait to marry the man of my dreams
Been engaged for a year past on the 1st March.
So far we have the Venue picked and deposit paid, and the photographer and videographer.
Have a lot of small bits that i can do - e.g. favours that can be bought in advance and the bits and pieces for making the cards, place names etc.
Its all about saving at the moment. We are trying to sort out a house and a mortgage so that we dont have that running up on us at the time of the big payments for the wedding.
The excitement has begun ladies... :T it will be no time coming around
