Oh I forgot to say hstrug, I've seen a few things here and there about Smooch rings, and think they were mostly positive. If I were you, maybe search the name on wedding forums and see what has been said about them?

That's not good Steph! I was tempted to go to the London one myself but decided against it. Did you not see anything useful at all?

I've heard back from 5 of the 6 venues I emailed, one of which is our favourite. It's in budget which I'm really happy about so we're hoping to go view it at some point soon. We'll probably view 1 or 2 of the others too just to be certain, but am hoping the favourite will be perfect enough!

    Hello to the newbies!

Squish - we looked at quite a few online, many of which we quickly ruled out based on distance from where we live (had our hearts set on marrying in our local church). We planned to visit 3, went to the first one and fell in love, couldn't stop talking about it and comparing the others to it... visited a 2nd one to show willing and really couldn't get excited about it. Ended up cancelling the 3rd one as we felt we were wasting our time and theirs! Like others have said, I think you know as soon as you visit somewhere, though I guess for us we were perhaps a little more limited than others on terms of choice - and also lucky that we could be a bit flexible on budget (ours is more than we ideally wanted to spend but we're just hoping to cut back in other areas!)

Dress shopping starts this weekend, eek so excited!! Has anyone else been for a try on yet?

Hey Sundaysgirl! Thanks for the input, I'm finding all the experiences people have told me about really useful. We're going to see out first (and favourite) venue for the reception on Monday afternoon. I think if we like it enough we won't bother looking anywhere else. It's in the right location, good transport links and a Holiday Inn round the corner for anyone who needs somewhere to stay (though we shouldn't have many).

Ohhh dress shopping! Exciting! Let us know how it goes :)

Good luck for Monday Squish! I hope its just as lovely as you want it to be.

Sundaysgirl I have (off the cuff) but I didn't find anything I liked. I think the atmosphere the shop creates has a lot to do with it - I didn't feel out of place there but I didn't feel really settled and comfortable either. Oh and also I see you're hoping to do your own music - that's our plan too! I think our venue preferred it as it didn't mean having to get anyone in. We're sending out request sheets with our invites so guests can choose songs like they would on the night if we had a DJ :)

Tempted to send the save the dates out but as the wedding isnt until 24th may it seems a bit premature! (teabythesea you're getting married on my birthday!)

Good luck with your venue search Squish. We looked at 3, totally discounted the first, I fell in love with the second and my fiance really liked the third (more cos it was easier pactically speaking). Needless to say we went with venue number 2 :-)

I've sent my save the dates and am going to start looking at dresses in April when my mum's coming down for a weekend visit. I'll go with her and my 2 bridesmaids, can't wait!!

Thank you hstrug and Fleur! It is a great venue for what we're after. However I've been thinking about it all day and it may be more hassle than we first thought as well as ending up as more money overall. My OH did like it and they have us pencilled in, but I think I need to sit down and work out the costs first.

hstrug-Sorry to hear you felt out of place, but hopefully you'll find somewhere you feel comfortable enough soon! Also love the idea of the request sheets!

    Fleur-How did the weekend go?

And hello angel11! Welcome to the thread :) How's your planning going?

I haven't organised very much, not as much as everyone else seems to have done anyway.

Going to contact Registrar tomorrow - wedding is in Rep Ireland, so not sure how far in advance we can book, etc. Have a few days off work next week, so going with mum to try on some dresses - bit nervous tbh, heard quite a few scare stories about obnoxious sales ladies. Though with my mum in tow, I wouldn't fancy their chances is their are any snide comments ;-) Started work on the wedding website this evening, and found some mini postcards on ebay that would be so sweet for Save the Dates.

Have had offers of help from friends/work colleagues with bouquet (hoping to have brooch bouquet), making invites, and cake. OH has a couple of friends who have family connections with photographers, so hopefully we can get some things sorted as stress-free & MSE as possible!!! :-)
  • Hello, newbie to the thread here.

We're booked in for a civil partnership in August 2014, very excited.
So far we've booked wedding venue/reception, registrar, got wedding insurance, made cheap save-the-dates (I'm distributing them as I see people to save on postage - very MSE!) and just about drawn up a wedding website.

Debating where to scrimp and where to splurge now. We won't be bothering with a wedding car or expensive dresses, and we're going for a playlist rather than a band or DJ. But tempted to spend on food, drink and decor. Not sure whether making our own cake / doing our own flowers would be a good idea or would just be mega-stressful! My sister took a very DIY approach with her wedding and said it all got to be too much hassle in the end.

Hi guys, I'm a newbie! We've booked our wedding (civil ceremony) for 28th February 2014! It was considerably cheaper than the day after as we would have been paying a Saturday, summer price. Instead were paying a Friday winter.

We've paid deposit at the venue, and the decorations,DJ,Evening buffet and reception stuff is all included in the package we got. I thought this was a wise decision based on the fact it's less stuff for me to organise. I've booked photographer and also last week chose my dress so I feel pretty organized. We've booked our honeymoon too because this also gave us more time to pay it off.

I got some save the date cards from ebay but I don't like them anymore. I initially did like them but 2 other couples we know who are getting married sent us theirs and are much better looking and quality. Ours just look cheap and nasty now. Trouble is I don't want to spend much getting some new ones. Anyone got any ideas? I really want postcard type ones but when I look at websites the postage offsetting them delivered to me is more than the cards themselves!
