She sounds like a complete cow tbh. So you're 'uninvited' in favour of some girl that the birthday boy has probably never even met?

FWIW, I'd tell them to stick the whole thing. Do you really need 'friends' like that?

OMG is she for real?! Unless you can really afford the £8 for the book l'd not bother now, cheeky mare!

Remember that "she" is the OP's friend's partner, not OP's friend. I wouldn't punish my friend by not buying them a birthday present because their partner is a piece of work. I think OP said it was a surprise party so OP's friend probably isn't even aware of any of this going on.

Ooh doesn't she sound nice? :D Not.
  • Yes, it's correct that I won't be punishing my friend for the sake of his girlfriend and he doesn't know exactly what's happening, he did say he would like a party with his friend's at the cricket club but left everything up to her to arrange. Apparently she is now pooping her pants worrying in case he won't like what she has chosen for him. I'm choosing not to get upset as I was trying to get out of it anyway lol and to be honest, a sit down meal with 50 people in attendance meant I wasn't probably going to get a chance to see him much anyway and I don't know his family that well as they are from a different part of the country so I would have been stuck on the "outcast" table with a drunk perverted uncle or something - this works out better for me really.

I've just read the whole thread. Glad it got worked out in the end but I am such a woman I am offended for you at the un-invite even though you don't even want to go ----typical woman lol.

I would really stop worrying if I were you although it is easy for me to say. If it is his "favourite restaurant" surely he will have a good night.

In future if she contacts you about anything (other than a surprise) I would just say you will speak to your friend directly. I have learned the hard way with both friends and family, it is much easier just to speak to the person concerned than second guess and deal with an obtrusive person.

Well that was a bit of luck.

I generally think the who pays depends on the circumstances. We live in a rural area, and family often come down to us rather than us to them. They usually assume that we will Ho to the pub ams unless they are paying l do it begrudgingly. We don't go out that often and certainly not to eat at quite expensive pubs, so when they come down here expecting and l have to fork out sixty odd quid l could use elsewhere l get very grumpy. In fairness to MIL she will pay for us. Otherwise it's a French stick from aldi and some crisps.

When I got married, I asked our guests to pay for their own lunch at at a local pub, but I also told them that we did not want ANY gifts!

We already lived togehter and had everything we needed, none of our guests were offended! Well they never said they were!

Some people must think they are very special. A party is great, but not to expect guests to pay.

BTW: just had an invitation for December!!!!!
