The only problem for me is that I need to go out once a week to get milk. I bulk buy everything else and so it is only the milk that causes me to break the habit at day 6 or 7.

Do you have room in the freezer to freeze some milk - I don't drink milk or take it in tea/coffee, really only use it for cooking and occasionally in breakfast cereal but do tend to buy 1ltr bottles and freeze in maybe 3-4 portions so that it's always there when I need it.
    Jan - June Grocery spends = £531.61
    July - Grocery spends = £119.54
    Aug - Grocery spends = £20.63

Hi everyone, not looked at this thread in a long while but I am so glad to see this thread still going strong!

I had one of those moments today, as I was throwing yet another loaf of mouldy bread out for the birds and thought .... hmm I really must get back on the FF. So here I am, fresh start, totally unplanned and raring to go. LOL

I have since split two newer loaves of bread, which I bought on Friday, into two and put half of each in the freezer; after having to rearrange everything in the drawer and throw out another half loaf of frozen bread to make room for the new.

My plan is to get through to the end of the week with what I have and then just do a little top-up-shop on Friday for 'essentials' - no more then $30 (fifteen pounds) to get me through the following week. As I go through this week I will carefully plan that little shopping trip, so that I only buy what I need in order to make the best out of stuff I already have.

It feels great already to have put a stake in the ground, I forgot how much I enjoy these little challenges.

  • Hello Everyone!! I have taken a small tumble on the fiscal fast but, it wasn't a huge spend. I bought some gingerale because I haven't been feeling very good. I have Poly Cyctic Kidney Disease and it can make my stomach feel really icky and I can't eat. I'm fine for the moment, but there is no telling when my stomach might start feeling icky.
Other than that I am doing ok. I plan on continuing my FF untill the 18 to make up for buying the gingerale although it was on sale. I have been having an itch to knit and the weather has been rainy today, so I stayed home.
I am not going to beat myself up over the spend on the gingerale because it did make me feel better. I have no plans to spend except for my phone bill which doesn't count on this FF.
I've been enjoying my Christmas gifts, CD player looking like a 1950's Jukebox that changes colors on the frame,(like the 1950's neon diner clocks) and the movie Giant. (I'm a James Dean fan!! And I'm 32!! LOL)
So I am hoping I will be feeling better. Kidney Disease just isn't fun!!! Anyway, I have a fairly healthy ememrgency fund thanks to the Fiscal Fasts I have been doing.
Ok enough "Chatter", off to work on knitting a Prayer Shawl!! (I LOVE knitting the prayer shawls!!!)
I hope everyone is doing well. If you've 'fallen off the wagon' just get back on and don't beat yourself up about it. Just hop back on the wagon!!!
    I love all of you!!!!
Frugal in '14!!!! God Bless all of You!!! Frugal = 'Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without!!!'-Saying from the Great Depression in the US 1929-39. Love you, Erica Dawn

    Afternoon all,

Welcome to the new people and sorry to hear that you have been unwell erica.

Day 1 of my fiscal fast. I will need to buy some eggs sometime during the week as I will be making a cake for my dad's 80th birthday.

Apart from this, there should be no other expenditure.

I need to check the fridge later to ensure that everything is used up.

Hope you are all having a nice sunday.

    Peony x

I could buy more I am slowly clearing my freezer. Next week I plan to do one of my slow cooker chilli's and that will give me 18 meals so that will almost fill up one whole freezer tray. I used to get milk bags from the milkman and get a month at a time. With that I could actually hide in the house for weeks. I would hit 28 NSD a month without fail.

The fact is that I use the cash that I get on my first shopping trip of the month so I could have already treat it as part of my first Spend day.
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.
  • Well I knew some spends necessary over weekend ! However we are now £98.64 over the budget for the month so some serious frugaling required now to the end of the month!
DD1 impressed me by making brownie bites to take to the cinema (the bank of Mum officially now closed) and buying "did you know 6 cans of Pepsi for £1.67 which is cheaper than 1 drink at the cinema!". Er yes I did know but am glad my girls getting to grips with the changes of live style since divorce, finally!
Even more impressive was her decision to order a kids meal at Wagga's and drink water!
DD2 resisted offer of trip to Westfields to shop and persuaded friends to go to cinema because she had vouchers!
Got shopping, petrol and bus fare using cash and purse now closed for 5 days!
Erica Polycycstic kidney disease a horrible thing. My father has it although he was blessed with a transplant a couple of years back when his kidneys failed. Gingerale a small but necessary treat I think! Sounds like you are very careful from reading your back posts. I admire you!

Ok, so I kinda failed today, but I'm not down about it.

I spent just over £5 on ingredients for soup. I got new potatoes, celery, carrots, bacon, stock pots (£1 for 4 in tesco, btw) and a turnip (swede).

I added to this: onions, lentils, barley, peppers, seasoning from the cupboards.

I now have enough for 3 weeks of lunches at work.

I made up a load of sandwiches for my daughter for school lunches as well. Whatever I'm not using tomorrow will be frozen.
  • due to a ridiculously expensive December, me and the OH have had no choice but to do the Fiscal Fast. Only thing we've bought is petrol and train tickets for work. currently we're on day 9 with 4 more to go til payday.... We've been very inventive with stuff from the cupboards and freezer. Judging by the state of the cupboards...tomorrow's dinner will be peaches and olives lol

Day three of second f/fast this month.this morning I have book club(free tea and biscuit:):)) so no shopping required or even going anywhere near a shop. This afternoon will be spent knitting as I want to finish off my DD's little dogs coat as its getting a bit nippy now and her tiny Jack Russell hates the cold and looks quite pathetically at you when she gets put out into the garden for a run :):)
Lots of soup made over the weekend so plenty for lunches this week.
zollster I almost lost my cuppa spluttering about your proposed dinner today :):):) well done on getting through your stocks.I have so much stuff in my cupboards I think I could feed the street:):)
But it is going to be used up as I have decided that enough is enough and I'm hanging onto my cash this month instead.
Necessity, is after all the mother of invention, so I am going very inventive during January :):)
    Good Luck everyone.

Day four for me and I might have family visiting, not sure yet but need to have a lunch ready just in case, found some quorn mince in the freezer so with some spuds from the sack a shepherd's pie I think but will have to serve it with baked beans as veg is a bit low, will have to rummage. Promised to ice biscuits with granddaughter so might have to make some cookie dough as well.
Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.
