Jesus, unless you read the hallmark (it's not that difficult just google it) you won't know whether he's a liar or all the other bad things everyone here is trying to convince you that he is.

If you're willing to accept that he's a wrong 'un without even bothering to check you're no better than him, and quite frankly neither of you should marry the other.

I'm not stupid and I'm really not bothered whether its 9 or 18 carat! Like I said, I'm not really into jewellery. I was just surprised at the price.

He's not a "wrong 'un" ! To be quite honest, I think this is all getting blown a bit out of proportion now. I know what he's like really and having read things through on here, I'm happy to accept that a cheap ring doesn't mean he doesn't love me. He shouldn't have lied no, he knew I wouldn't expect an astronomically priced ring but at the end of the day I don't like it any less.

I would be! For 2 figures it sure as hell won't have been diamond. Why not just use a ring-pull from a can of diet Coke and have done with it?

One in two marriages end in divorce, a lot of those who stay together are unhappy but to scared to go their own way. In fact I had a lovely friend who wanted to split but didnt and died still in that unhappy marriage.

Do you really think that the marriages that are the rare exception and stay together happily ever after, are the ones that start out by lying to each other?

I was going to say, are you sure thats not the receipt for a deposit?

My OH paid a deposit of 10% on my ring, which ended up being in 2 figures.

That was until he'd got my ring size correct, then he went and paid the rest.

I was engaged once to a right knob. Anyway, he bought me a ring and reckoned it was about £950 but when I left him/got thrown out, I kept the ring to sell as he had got me into terrible debt.

Got it valued at two places for about £40. Ended up selling it for £45 and took me new fella out for lunch.

But on your situation, maybe it was the final payment on pickup? Or maybe he's lied etc etc, but either way, you have to know. .So find out and let us all know!

    Hi OP,

I would be a bit miffed too but it's not the end of the world. It's actually a little funny in a way, quite a good story in years to come!

The way that I would approach it is honestly, it will bode better for the future. I would just say that I found the receipt and looked at it. Ask about the ring and then just let it go. At least you clear the air and can reassure him if he is embarrased about the money gap.

    Good luck

I bet you wish you'd never asked now OP!

I'd still like to know what the ring is like tho.

    .
But the whole point of the thread was that you felt offended?
So you've been shown how to find if it is 9 or 18 carat and will know now what the answer is. I hope you can work things out for what's best for you -what ever you decide.

But if it's 18ct that's not the receipt for it, is it.

    I would have to ask.......

    - If he paid a lot of money for it and the receipt was just the deposit (which he threw out as he had the final receipt) then you could go for the rest of your relationship thinking you were wearing a cheap ring (thinking if insurance purposes mainly)

    - If it did cost 2-figures and is 9ct, then he has clearly lied, bigged himself up and thinks you can be duped easily. The air needs to be cleared so you can tell him that you don't expect expensive items, but you do expect him to be truthful about it.

Whatever the reason was, the truth would be important to me. It doesn't have to be confrontational or accusing, just a simple discussion.
