Thanks for this info (about Xenical). I didn't know it caused suicidal tendencies, but I do know it has some extremely inconvenient and distressing other effects!! DH was on it for a while and we have vivid memories of having to change the whole bed including the mattress-cover because of an uncontrollable leakage of disgusting orange-coloured fluid from you-know-where. (TMI!!!)

In response to Anubis, yes, it can't all be down to food, because if it was, I'd be as slim as a whippet. I'm not even 5 ft tall and I weigh 10 1/2 stone, but having said that, I have
managed to lose a couple of stone over the last 3 years. One thing that DH and I did was to stop eating potatoes in any shape or form and we don't miss them. The trouble with potatoes is that once you peel them you've got rid of the valuable nutrients just under the skin and then you have to do something with what's left. If we ever ate a potato now it would be jacket-baked, but in fact we eat fibre-rich carbs like wholemeal bread which takes longer to digest. The low GI way has been helpful to us.

DH was a good swimmer once, that was until the knee surgery (4 x replacements in one knee!) and he's absolutely terrified of kicking out instinctively and damaging that knee. The only other option is amputation and he'd rather not go down that road if it can be avoided. I go to aqua-aerobics.

I have added a small edit to say in my case it is not all down to food which is what I meant.

I do know there are undoubtedly cases where being overweight is all down to food, but my post was to stipulate that there is no dwp award based solely on being obese. Now, health problems may arise from being obese, but no way do you go to a medical obese, they determine you are obese and thus award you for being so and no other reason.

Apart from the steroids which I can no longer take, my main issue is immobility due to pain, exhaustion and weakness as I am in bed mostly. I have been trying to exercise while in bed but find it near impossible, as I get breathless very easy ( and can't sleep flat because of it.

I am very interested in changing my diet and I am interested in low carb, infact I am so desperate to have a bit of quality of life that I am hanging onto life by a thread - literally.

When I was healthy there was no stopping me, I even used to knit for money as well as working two other jobs. There is no way I could knit now if I tried, in fact I have a half finished jumper from many years ago done with very expensive wool that I was doing for my husband, and there it still is. I cried the other week when my son came across it while clearing out some cupboards. It was started before he was born and he is now 16. It brought back memories for both me and hubby.

I desperately need to find a hobby that I can do in bed that does not cause pain. I was extremely creative and hate the wasted time in my life just being trapped in this darn bed. Enough said now, I have gone off tangent! Sorry! :o

A new study suggests that those who overeat may actually get less pleasure from food. So they're forced to consume larger quantities (and added calories) to achieve an equivalent reward.

I heard somewhere that a wafer thin mint is very good for excessive weight problems.

But surely you can't qualify for ESA just because you are fat, can you?

I too suffer from hypothyroidism and am on medication for it. In the months leading up to diagnosis, I banged on nearly 3 stone in weight (very distressing at the time because I'd always been a size 12/14), I'm very slowly losing it, because I have a job in which I am very active, and I'm limiting my intake of crap, calorie laden food.

If you did have an under active thyroid, it would be diagnosed with a simple blood test. I had my blood test at 9.30am one day, and had the doctor on the phone at teatime the same day asking me to go straight down to the surgery. Your doctor would not mess about if he thought that was your problem. Too much risk of organ failure is what he told me.

I was diagnosed as hypothyroid in 2008 because I was totally exhausted and sleepy all the time and piling on weight. I put on 1.5 stone, but whatever I try I cannot seem to lose it, it is just stuck there:mad: So even getting the right dose of thyroxine doesn't always help.

Please, do you know of any way of shifting this excess fat - I HATE it:mad:

Are you suggesting im lying? I have tests for thyoid every six weeks, as they also need to check my ANA and AntiDNA cells. My point was, thyroid trouble can be treated and weight loss CAN happen. But you need to help yourself. My body is for the scrapheap i think. 29 going on 99!! lol x
The feeling i got when i confirmed my place studying criminology at Exeter Uni was brilliant!!!!!

The pride my children told me they had in me was even better!!!!! # setting positive example to children is OUTSTANDING!!!! !:grouphug::grouphug::smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea:smileyhea

    Not at all.

I was diagnosed 3 years ago, and I'm still not on (what I feel) the correct dose.

The only way I can feel human, is to make sure I'm slightly hyper, rather than hypo.

Don't get me started on the way that GPs in this country, treat people with hypothyroidism... and all this crap they spout about "in range" TSH levels.

I am the same; never really feel well.

The doctor just seems to think that as long the blood test results come within the set figures then all is well.

It is very frustrating and I am desperate to lose some weight:mad:
