According to a recent list put out by the DWP, there are 2,000 or so claimants that are currently receiving ESA and some with DLA as well, because they are accepted 'as too fat to work'.
Please provide a link to this....You don't get it for being fat, you get it for health reasons. Not only thin people get sick you know! Link of the list please.

I too am on thyroxine but it is a myth that you get a blood test, take thyroxine and all is well. I have been taking this for over 15 years and no one has ever been able to regulate my dose or test results. I am tested often, my TSH varies greatly and my dose is changed regularly.

The thyroid gland is very complicated and very clever it regulates our body. Synthetic thyroxine can only try to emulate it and some people are OK but others struggle with it over their lifetime. Also it is not always possible to give everyone the dose they require due to interaction with other medical conditions.

Ironically I am hypothyroid because they could not regulate my overactive thyroid and thought it would easier to treat hypothyroidism so gave me a dose of radioactive iodine. I wish I knew then what I know now.

Nearly 2,000 claimants are on incapacity benefit simply because they are too
fat to work, figures revealed last night.

A breakdown of official figures showed the number claiming the handout for
that reason has almost doubled since 1997 to 1,950

I think such claims and figures should be taken with great caution. The effects of obesity (a physical disablement according to caselaw CIB/1387/2000) may give rise to scoring points in PCA or WCA.. but obesity as such doesn't entitle you to anything. I get ESA but I haven't a clue how they'd record what I qualify for ESA regarding in terms of medical condition because it doesn't really work like that... I think I probably get ESA largely because of the effects of OCPD but that hadn't even been diagnosed when I had my WCA and it certainly won't be recorded anywhere as the reason for me getting ESA. Similarly with DLA... I get DLA it would appear largely because of the effects of OCD... but I doubt that is recorded anywhere and the main body of my claim was due to the effects of depression.

What I suspect those figures represent are that obesity is named as medical condition in claim basic details. But the first condition I put on all my claims is anxiety and it appears I am not even getting any points etc in relation to that.

What is for sure is there is no such thing as too fat to work.. and no benefit makes that determination... it is fantasy journalism. They may determine you have mobility problems due to obesity etc... just as they may determine you have difficulty learning tasks due to brain damage.

I somehow suspected you would link to that, and it shows you haven't bothered to find the link to the official government list that categorically states that people who are fat get DLA/incapacity for the sole reason of being fat.

I will tell you again that NO ONE gets DLA or incapacity benefits for the sole reason of being fat.

As Muttley says, treat such propaganda figures with caution instead of swallowing up everything the media puts out.

THERE IS NEVER ANY SUCH reason given to any claimant for the success of a claim that states: "The DM awarded you this benefit because you are obese or too fat to work"

I have put weight on and I am probably defined as overweight/clinically obese given that I am 5ft and weigh 11 to 12 stones, so the press would probably include me in those figures (as the BMI index of being determined as clinically obese can simply be a stone or so above the average BMI)

However, I became ill when I was 7stone, and the weight has piled on due to intensive steroid treatment over the years, coupled with hypothyroidism and the fact that I am virtually immobile having to spend most of my life in bed. In my case It has !!!!!! all to do with food!

So I would suggest as I would be in those propaganda figures, to take them with a pinch of salt, since my weight has NOTHING whatsoever to do with my disabilities!

Although I know some medical conditions can cause weight gain surely you need food to sustain that weight? If a gastric band is going to work for the OP then it is food related, really.

Also there's nothing to stop someone with continence problems working, im not the only incontinent person in my work place and neither of us bring our sister in to help! There are aids for people who have problems cleaning up after themself.

Put all your effort into losing weight. Ask your doctor for Xenical for a boost. (Yes, I know about the side effects, but your sister is there to help)

Xenical is being taken off the market, they are no longer allowed to prescribe it and all current paitents will be removed from it soon :( Due to its suicidal side affects etc...

I found out when I asked my new GP to put me back on it after a move...
