  • Afternoon everyone,
am thinking of buying AutoAid cover, however can someone confirm that you can be invoiced later for the costs of the recovery/breakdown rather than paying at the scene with debit card? Just in case I don't have any money in my account.

    Thanks,
    Lyle

I think that depends on the recovery firm that come out, it is not in Autoaids remit to confirm this as the assistance is "pay and claim".

  • Southside of Glasgow. Returned home Friday night with cooling warning light on, car leaking water. Frosty winter's Saturday phoned Autoaid confused lady eventually arranged a tow to local garage. Farmer Joe turned up in a half back with his brother. Know-it-all wants to start up my car. Big argument ensues - no I said it's a frosty morning car has a water problem you're not starting my car. Well he said it's facing in and too dangerous to tow out. Was expecting a proper pick-up truck says I you've only got a tow rope. Eventually agree a method to get it out and he tows it to local garage. Owner appalled, totally illegal to use a tow rope - that's what recovery firm sent out said I. Shake of the head. Farmer Joe wants a cheque does not do credit cards. Can't give me a reciept scrawls a price on his recovery report. Sends a proper receipt a week later. Autoaid settles up 3-4 weeks later. Never again.

I registered with AutoAid but have not yet needed to use them. I was not impressed with the registration process. I took out membership for myself and my husband but when I informed them we do not have the same name (in common with many women nowadays, I chose to retain my own name on marriage) they informed me I would need to forward a copy of my marriage certificate. I have never been required to do this for any official form in the past and was incensed at them requiring "proof" that I was telling the truth. During the conversation with the telephone operator, she informed me I was very unusual in not taking my husband's name. I suggested it might be a fairer policy to request copies of all applicants marriage licences as anyone could use the same name as a partner and just say they were married. She said it was not legal to change your name unless it was by deed poll or marriage. This is rubbish but she was insistent she was right. I think it would be advisable for companies to move with the times, give better staff training and make their policies consistent. I felt their attitude was offensive and discriminatory.
  • Tried Autoaid last year, with upgrade to European cover. Very unimpressed with the phone helpline when I had a problem on the way back to the ferry in France. The operator had poor language skills, wasn't in France and didn't have a clue where the nearest garage was. I couldn't even establish whether the problem was covered (One of the windows had fallen into the car door).

All this when I was sole adult with 2 kids and a ferry crossing to catch....what was that RAC deal again???

  • My joint RAC policy is just about to run out, I've just called to tell them not to review, and I think maybe we'll go with Autoaid, we'll just be in the UK, and always have room on our credit cards so seems to make sense...
Started paying off debt in Sept 07, inspired by this website :-) Almost 7.7k debt, now 2.9k (end of June 08):T
    Main things we've been doing:
interest free cards, cashback cards, store's one brand groceries, just getting what we need
*can't wait until I'm debtfree! Should be by November!*

Joined AutoAid back in April and have had to call breakdown out twice already to a very tired 12-year-old car. We are very impressed - the last time the recovery van came within half an hour. I have twice not had my policy number and they have not made a big deal about it. The first breakdown truck was a bit longer coming out as the driver couldn't find the car but AutoAid HQ were extremely helpful and got another breakdown van out when the other one gave up on us! We didn't even have to pay at the time and were given an invoice. It is obviously better to carry a card of some kind and, to be fair, it is stipulated that you have to pay at the time - so just carry a card at all times. For the price, the service is brilliant and I only have praise for them.:j
  • Last year I signed up to AA as I had not heard about Auto Aid, AA increased my cover up to relay for £10 then today my renewal came through they were asking for £97 and that didn't cover home start. I rang them up and when I said I was going to Auto Aid they tried to persuade me they were a rubbish company and that I wouldn't get my money back, which from reading these forums I knew just wasn't true. I'll be signing up to Auto Aid when my AA runs out and saving £61 and have home start!!

Ive just read then re read this policy
The thing that worries me is all the way through it says you can be towed home or to the local garage whcih ever is closer
With my best mate being a mechanic all I ever want is towing home not to a local garage im sure it says along the lines of whereevers the closer

yeh ive joined autoaid after reading good reports on this thread.

thing is when you pay £36 i dont expect a service as good as rac or aa ( even if it turns out to be). you get what you pay for in the end.

if you need the bright yellow van turning up and no bills to pay for repair then autoaid is no good for you.

lets be honest £36 quid is 6 gallons of petrol for peace of mind
