Has anyone tried upgrading their PUFL contract to a paid for one and getting a good deal? I'm thinking maybe a reduced price iPhone deal or even much more cross net minutes and texts for say £5 a month?

Personally I wouldn't bother. Even if you get a stonking deal you will be back to square one again in 12 or 18 months time. Do nothing and you will still have your PUFL and it's free calls for life.

From experience, keep your PUFL safe and try, as a new customer, for a good deal. Many posts in this forum suggest that the networks offer better deals to new customers rather than those upgrading. Hence the number of requests on here for help about PAC's and porting.

I keep my two family PUFL's sepaarate from any other phone contacts as such a good deal is unlikely to be repeated.

I see your point but mine is never used now. It's been sat in a drawer for the last couple of years. I just thought it might have some bargaining usefulness.

Sorry to hear that you don't use it.

Maybe you could achieve some deal as I'm sure O2 would be happy to see the PUFL go.

Have you thought of selling it on Ebay or transferring it to a relative / friend?

Sorry guys n gals but as of now, if you want to upgrade your phone, you will HAVE to go on a new 18 or 24 month contract. no 12 months or pay up front deals now. If you want to retain your line advance (yearly) or pay up front for life plan, you cannot have a new phone, you would need to buy a new one seperately. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

What is your source of this information?

you'd now be better off living in one.

I can't understand the message from spinning sheep. I came across this thread yesterday and went into the O2 shop for a free phone.

The girl knew all about it. She went on the computer and within seconds said that I was entitled to a new phone. I asked all the questions about whether it was the same contract and saw it in black and white that I was on the same tarrif.

So I had no problem today.

Why is there so much confusion from O2 over their PUFFL deal ? Even their own staff are not consistent in the message.

When I took out this deal originally, several years ago, it was made clear that there would be no upgrades. Fair enough.

Nevertheless, four months ago, O2 kindly gave me one - a K850i with an 8 GB memory card - which I regarded as a very nice free bonus.

I'm happy with the deal and it's been a great investment.

I look on it as being a PAYG card that never needs topping up and gives me 50 minutes of free landline calls a month. :)

Basically we call up to our dealer upgrades dept for a PUFFL, and they say yay or nay, and now they are saying NAY. if you upgraded and retained your deal and nobody batted an eyelid, 1 the staff in the store obviously dont understand the policy and 2 neither did upgrades. Its really very simple:

IF YOU WANT A NEW PHONE, YOU HAVE TO SIGN UP TO 18 OR 24 MONTHS.

If you are now in possession of a new handset on the understanding that you retain your deal, you will either be very lucky and keep it no questions asked, or, you will automatically be put onto the equivalent 18 month contract, I would call customer care and check ASAP.
