:o I should hang my head in shame, I only managed a 10 minute call with these scammers this morning.

I started by trying to determine who they were; then asked them which of my computers had the virus - they couldn't tell me, could only say it was "the one with Windows 7". As this narrows it down to one of two, I asked them to give me the licence number of the infected system. He reeled off a chain of numbers, which I got him to repeat about ten times by interrupting and misquoting it back to him; then I left him 'on hold' while I went and checked which computer that was. I do hope he enjoyed the combined noise of my washing machine, a boisterous toddler, and CBeebies :) But perhaps not as he'd rung off when I went back to the phone :rotfl:

I like that approach. Could be the ignorant parent in front of a myriad of offspring's computers - has great potential for stringing them along with the thought of multiple computers to have a go at. "My son will be so cross at me messing with his computer, but I'd hate him to catch a disease from it.... Oh dear, there's a naked woman doing something to an animal, could that be this virus thing? My son wouldn't like to see that."
Just need the call now. :)

My BIL had this happen to him, it came from a call centre calling themselves Global PC Helpline, he sadly thought it was genuine and has had a headache undoing all the problems they caused.

If they call me i'll enjoy keeping them hanging on, I can tell you!!

See how they like it!!

This is my experience today with Douglas

I've just had an interesting phone call from an Indian sounding Douglas on 01444390994 telling me that the IP address company sent him an email telling him my computer was infected with viruses, and so on.

    well you get the idea?

After trying for 45 mins to get my computer to connect to the internet, without success, I must add, he left me his phone number to call back if I succeeded.

So far he has called 3 times asking if I was successful in connecting and I said no each time.

I kept offering interesting suggestions as to why I couldn't.

I could only connect at night when neighbour was home, I had to wait until network card cooled down, blue light was on continuously, never said which one, and so on, all to no avail.

It was because my computer was telling him it had viruses that was what was wrong.

How could it tell him it had a virus if it couldn't connect to the internet I asked.

You're not understanding what I am saying, the IP company is sending me emails telling me this. And so on.

Good fun for someone with a broken leg stuck in the house.

    Passes the time.

    Wind them up I say.

He called another twice after that and is going to call tomorrow to see if my ISP has fixed my internet.

I had a call today, the first one i have actually answered as I don't normally bother with 'International' calls.

I was told that they had been instructed by Microsoft to call me as I had a problem on my computer that was affecting the Microsoft systems!!
I said, "Really?" He said, "Yes, we need to access your computer immediately, if its only a small problem we won't charge you but if it is a big problem we will need your card details." I said that I wasn't going to pay them to fix a problem as my computer was still able to do whatever I wanted it to do so I wasn't bothered if it had a problem. He told me I didn't understand, it was Microsoft that had said that the problem was affecting them but I needn't worry, as long as I gave them access to my computer, he was sure he could fix it without it costing too much....yea right!!
I said I didn't believe that Microsoft knew it was me who had a problem, he said he could prove it as he had my full name and postcode, which he gave me. I said that he could have got that from anywhere but he insisted that Microsoft had given it to him and I must do as he said to avoid them taking further action against me.
So I said, "Oh alright then, what do you want me to do?" He asked if I was sitting in front of the computer so I said I was.
He said I was to press the start button so I told him I couldn't see one, he kept telling me it was on the bottom of the screen on the left hand side. "No, no, can't see it" He asked what was at the bottom of the screen, I told him it was just black with nothing on it. He asked if It was switched on, I said that he hadn't told me it needed switching on.
So I pretended to switch it on and kept him waiting for ages while it booted. Then he kept telling me to press this and that, all of which I wasn't doing. He kept asking me what it said and I kept telling him he should know, He kept asking me to read back off the screen and I kept saying there was too much and just to tell me what to press next.
When it came to the bit about giving him remote access I asked him how he was going to be able to do that, he said I would be able to see the things on the screen, moving. I told him I thought that was clever and asked again how he would be able to access it. He said over the Internet, I said that that was even cleverer as I did not have a modem connected to my computer and never used the Internet. He got annoyed then and told me I had wasted his time!!

Damn though, I didn't think to time the call!!

Last time we got one, my boyfriend started telling the guy on the end of the phone about what he was doing. Conversation went roughly thus:

BF: You know what you're doing is a scam? You're cold calling people in the hope that they don't understand what they're doing and you can sell them security software that doesn't work.
Agent: This is a good security solution
BF: No, it's not. I know several people who've been taken in by this. You can tell your bosses that what they're doing is wrong and probably illegal. I work in a call centre too, I understand that you're probably just doing what you're asked to, and it's not you personally that's scamming people.
Agent: I am calling to provide help for people
BF: But it doesn't really help anyone
    Agent: Doesn't it?
BF: No, it's basically extorting money out of people who don't know any better. I'm sure if you look around you can find a better job than this
Agent: If you want to pay my air fare over to the UK..
BF: Haha, I can't do that. But please, try to do something better than this.
    Agent: OK, I will
    BF: Have a nice day
    Agent: Bye

I hope he walked out after that.

If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
    Now 20% cooler
  • I have also had great fun with this a couple of times but nowhere near as long as others. I pretend to do everything they say and when they ask what it says I always say well you tell me and when they say I say yes. But all the time I say I don't understand them so they have to repeat everything so many times. When it comes to the last bit I keep saying "pardon" and they eventually hang up on me. The last time they called I said why don't I just give you my bank details to save all this bother. They hung up.They haven't called again but if they do I will try harder!
