Nah, don't mind.. Sam is my name so nothing to get annoyed about!

Sam has never been shortened though.. what to? Sa... or just S ?

Rarely get called Samantha, occasionally by my Mum - Sometimes Sammy or Mantha, both fine

In fact I don't mind anything, as long as it is not rude - will even answer to oi

The user name I use now, is actually a shortened version of a user name I used on another forum, Loobylu. Everyone there used to call me Loobs.

We have met quite a few of the people we first got to know on various forums and we still can't get out of the habit of calling them by their user name and not their real name !
  • It doesn't bother me at all on here, people can mix my username around how they like.

I do have this thing though about real life names being abbreviated. Some names I love but would avoid naming a child with them because of what it can be shortened to. Will not give examples on here as I do not wish to offend anyone who may have that name.

Gawd dont I waffle on a saturday night when I have had a glass or two

I have been known has JP on here on the odd occasion which is fine by me. In RL, if anything happens with my name at all then it gets lengthened to Janey seeing as you can't shorten it, and I know one person who refers to me by my initials for some unknown reason.

And it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end
  • I don't mind people calling me Thrifty on here. I remember getting Thriftyman once though - it's "manc" as in someone from Manchester, less of the "man" please :p

This makes me think of something else. Does anyone on here have a short name which people lengthen incorrectly? I've got a friend whose first name is Chris (as in, that's all that appears on his birth certificate, he was never named Christopher) but he used to get teachers calling him Christopher at school and now he's an adult he gets letters addressed to Christopher, bosses and colleagues at work calling him Christopher etc. Do they think it sounds more formal or do they just like being wrong?!

(Conversely, I've got another friend called Christopher who hates being called Chris but everyone calls him that no matter how often he reminds people! They need to swap lives...)

Not a problem at all as my username is long. I was Sat, Sats and occasionally Satters on another forum I used.

My real name is 7 letters long and doesn't have a standard short form, but many people try to shorten it to just the first syllable which sounds horrible (it ends in th) and I do gently correct people if they do that.
Public appearances now involve clothing. Sorry, it's part of my bail conditions.
  • I work with two guys who were named Andrew by their parents. One insists on being referred to as Andrew and the other one only responds to Andy. I cant imagine calling them any other way as it would feel wrong somehow, yet I cant explain why. I have also come across guys named Micheal who have very set ideas on whether they keep the name as it is or shorten it to Mike. Woe betide anyone who referred to them the wrong way :D

my niece's name is Louise, and she regularly is called Loobs or Loobyloo by friends/family :D.

my username is sometimes shortened, my real name can't really be shortened but sometimes its lengthened - either/both are fine with me :).

Not personally but I know a Mel that gets mad when people call her Melanie

    Its Melissa

  • I've no issue with my username being shortened.

Oddly enough I was an adult before anyone shortened my given name. I can count on one hand those who do.

I shorten my kid's names when talking about them.

Jewelry? Seriously? Sheldon you are the most shallow, self-centered person I have ever met. Do you really think that another transparently-manipu... OH, IT'S A TIARA! A tiara; I have a tiara! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me!
