On a completely different tack, some of you live close to this school? Dave may be more informed on this that I am but as small holders you may all be interested.

The Government intends to remove land based BTEC courses from the subjects that count towards the school performance tables. Which means that schools will have to stop teaching them or face being classed as failing and be forced into becoming academies.

Young people people from farming and other backgrounds will no longer able to study subjects that prepare them to work the land.

Ironically their list of awards that are classed as excellent and for which there is no limit on the numbers who can be recruited by universities includes a City and Guilds Level 3 in Land based subjects but schools will be disencouraged from teaching the year 10 and 11 students who would progress to it!

I think part of Brymore's problem may also be that it's in the same smallish village as what was once called Cannington College. I know Brymore is for younger students but, with Cannington on it's doorstep providing Land-Based courses, it must make making it's case harder.

That's very good of your vets, LIR. Fingers crossed for the old girl.

Quick question, what surface area would 14lL of creocote cover and do you do inside and out?
    L

They usually say about 6-8sq m per litre, lucielle. So between 84 & 112 sq m. Whether you do inside & out depends on what you're treating plus, if not actually necessary, personal choice

Oh I am so tired of trying to juggle everything

There is so much work to do in the house and in the garden that if I think about it too much it becomes a bit overwhelming.

Seed wise I do not have a single thing planted and I am conscious that time is ticking!

Rummer I know how you feel, I'm too tired myself to go into much detail but I am exactly the same - the lists get longer and I spend more time thinking about the jobs than actually doing them and it all gets too much. I am also a serial procrastinator :rotfl:

This spell of dry weather, plus big jobs like fencing and gravelling the garden getting done spurred me on so I did a lot more "doing" than "thinking" BUT I'm running out of steam again...

I am at the point where I need to keep plodding along, not worrying too much about getting things done in the right order but just getting things off the list really helps declutter my mind and that's half the battle with me!

Don't worry about seeds, later sowings catch up with early ones esp with this cold. Many seeds can be sown several times into summer so I really wouldn't rush, nothing worse than frost killing off a load of precious seedlings!

Thanks for the heads up RAS :T I've signed the petition.

My step daughter was so into animals when she lived with us (years ago, long story for another day!) and when we heard the animal care NVQ(?) was on her local school's curriculum we were so pleased BUT not enough people were interested and she ended up doing hair and beauty and now hairdressing at college

LIR your vets sound amazing - I really like my practice, one of the vets lives upstairs and has gone above and beyond for me before, but I've never heard of that much dedication - from them and you :A she's in safe hands

Impressed with the vets too, lir.

I Creocote the inside of the hen houses, lucielle.

Government meddling in education is one of my pet hates, RAS. They are always banging on about the need to cater for "less academic " youngsters, but apparently, giving some vocational courses proper status is a big ask. :( It's not as if modern farming methods are simple either; read any copy of the MVF monthly magazine to see what I mean!

The metal roof/wall sheeting looks like it's a goer, but there is much more than I realised......Hundreds of ££ worth. It could make the barn much cheaper to finish off though.

Don't let the birds inside it for a few days if you're doing the inside, lucielle. Apart from the creosote burning, the smell is enough to asphyxiate all living things for a while ;) :rotfl:

LIR - the vet sounds really good.

I too changed vets & am pleased with mine re old fat cat & advice about now skinny old cat. Some vets seema bit too keen on making money regardless of what's in the animal's best interests.

Not too bad a day. Another black lamb.....another male!

Got another bed dug over - hurray & some cladding on below the big winda.

I forgot to post that the Freegled 20litres of 'stuff' in a drum that had lost its label was indeed creosote. As I'm gradually painting all the support poles on the barn to deter the woodworm, that was a result. However, the steel roofing looks likely to be even more money-saving, even though we'll be paying for it. :D

Managed to finish concreting-in a line of posts yesterday before the heavens opened. So, we lose the biting east winds and we're immediately back to the wet stuff.....It's kick-started the proper signs of spring, so mustn't complain. Saw a skylark yesterday, but no swallows yet. They were here this time last year.

A lady in the village lost all her hens to a fox last week. While it might not be the reason, someone else did the locking up for her, so that's two people feeling sick. :(

We actually got proper rain at home overnight and a little more today. The big advantage is that it is warm enough to go out without a hat, scarf and gloves.

Must get all the stuff that has germinated planted up this weekend.
