    Yorkshire. :p

This area is my home territory. Anyway, checking places out by computer is cheap, though it used to be harder before Street View etc.

The house that we really should have bought was just off the Blackdowns at Uffculme. That was in 2003. I still won't go near there, because I just beat myself up! :(
I hate that. Everything for a reason???? (That's what I tell myself, anyway).
  • rhiwie are those b&b prices per person????

i REALLY DO LOVE THAT PLACE.... hope they get more bookings on the back of the programme..

Rozee, totally off topic here, in reality if someone wanted to make some sort of living out of renting houses, how many houses would they need? obviously a basic living, just to cover their own basic household expenses, and what type of pitfalls to look out for? and on average how long would a house be empty for, before you get another tennant in?

I REALLY got to get back to focusing on things, I got sooooo much going on, that i am missing the plot with everything financial at the moment.

    Can't believe its wednesday already,

We actually had a phone call last night from a stranger for our pork:T:T:T.

A rambler walked passed our pigs and seen our sign, he said the rambler's club walks all over the place, and see's animals, but we are the first one's he has seen with a sign up , with contact details for the meat for sale..

So this has really given me hope, that I was right about potential customers with the footpath:T:T:T

I don't believe in "Everything for a reason." I think we have free will and that it's up to us to make meanings from our experiences, not trust in guidance from some unseen force above or beyond.

So, we have the ability to make monumental c0ck-ups, or wise choices, and everything in between. Of course, we make half-decent decisions most of the time, and it was certainly rational for us to walk away from this particular holding in early 2003 for very sensible reasons. Looking back at the way things played out, however, the things that put us off were relatively trivial. We just lacked experience.

Hence my desire to be well-informed, property-wise. I didn't want another opportunity to pass us by, although it did! :o

I entirely agree. I am just about to get on the phone again about some professional advice I was given. I checked the regulations (accountancy issues) and thought I knew what the requirements were but decided to run it past a "professional". He gave me totally different advice to that which I'd deciphered - which was not good. I've just rechecked the regulations and I'm convinced he's wrong... It wouldn't be the first time a so called expert has got it completely wrong but it does make you wonder what you're paying them for. I'm back on the phone again this morning....

CTC The question about rental is very dependent on the sort of property you want to buy. My experience is of one where the properties are in a city in a good location, near hospitals and universities and very nice (and therefore expensive to buy in the first place). My tenants are professionals, academics or doctors and I rarely have a void because I don't charge the steepest rent the market would take. I bought when property prices were much lower so it makes it worthwhile, even though get a very low yield as a percentage of what they are worth in relation to the net income after I've paid for any outgoing, maintenance, accountant, repairs and renewals etc etc but I see them as my long term security, an alternative to a pension.

As an example, if I wre to sell up and buy the equivalent properties around here, where, although properties are somewhat cheaper, the rents are much lower, my yield would be even less and I'm sure I'd be making a significant loss.

If you have a specific idea in mind, I'd be happy to talk to you via PM, rather than clutter up the thread with landlord talk.

I think you also have to consider the acquisition costs and the risk associated with buying property at the moment. I don't have a crystal ball to predict where the housing market is going, but very few markets are performing in the current climate. And the other consideration is that property really ties up your capital. Once you're in, you really have to be in for the long term to make it worthwhile.

Horrid, dull, cold day here, but I have finished putting in the gravel boards which will protect our new hedge and half sorted the soil where I'm planting it. Now I'm too frozen to do any more. Need some blood, fish & bone next......;)

The breeze blocks are starting to arrive. The builders couldn't get the suppliers to drop them here because of access and other issues, so they are bringing them up from their place in three loads. This will get the neighbours talking! :rotfl:

    I've been Money Tipped!
We had a bit of rain over night, not a vast amount, but the ground was wet this morning. Even though it must be milder today it doesn't feel it now the air is not as dry.

Is it any wonder that the financial services industry gives itself a bad name. I decided a while back that I was entrusting control of my money to no one ever again.
