Am I the only one who thinks £3K to heat that is fairly expensive? I admit I know nothing about the running costs of the newer sources. What does GSHP in a normal 5-bed detached cost?
I must admit I don't watch GD but I was fascinated to find out how large a stone pile it was for a £3K (one source) heating bill so took a look at the site.
It's squarish, which helps as it makes life easier for pumping but I'd want it really toasty for that money :rotfl:
We have 20 rooms on this side (well over 100ft frontage as you know, rhiw) & 12 on the other & we don't usually spend that on oil (Rayburn often running all year) plus our electric. _pale_
However, having said that/ in tourism it's the visitors who usually end up paying for most, if not all, power through their bills.

im not far short of that just for my generator fuel..... although that is for electricity, its not running all the time..id say an average 8 hrs a day. and my heating is only on when ITS on...

not starting a badger debate here folks...;)

Nor am I really. I like them in principle, but I wouldn't like it if one decided to investigate the hen run.

I had a real battle with one in a friend's city garden, where I was trying to install a fence, so I know what they could do to the perimeter fencing on the run!

I know we have them around here, just as we foxes, and as long as they behave, we shall all get along splendidly. :A

Frankly, I'm amazed at how "well behaved" the animals here are, considering that roughly 20 sackfulls of domestic rubbish are placed close to our place every Sunday evening, before collection Mondays at 7am. Never once have they been attacked by anything at night during our time here, though the crows have caused mayhem in daylight.

Blimey, alfie  That's 5000 litres @ 60p (I think - :rotfl: - maths was never my strongest point but I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong).
I must admit it has to be absolutely arctic outside before our central heating goes on all day. It's usually on for a couple of hours morning & night.
As Rozee said about her youngster throwing off clothes now that they're used to living in the caravan, maybe I've become a bit inured to the cold :o

I guess the pool would take a fair bit although I have no experience of that - not allowed them here unless in an existing building.
I'm wondering what some people must run to get their bills so high. I moan about ours but then I'm naturally tight when it comes to utilities :rotfl:

The crappy house we rented before we bought this place was all electric, single glazed, uninsulated etc and that cost us £100 a week during Jan/Feb back in 2009. :(

But with all our dosh in the bank at nearly 7%, were we bovvered? :D :rotfl:

That's an average 74p per litre, isn't it? What type of generator (as in what fuel) do you use?

Yes. All the bills have soared in the last few years, sadly.

  • I haven't lurked on here for a while, so sorry for popping in out of the blue, but when I came across this earlier looking for permaculture books I knew where to post about it.

We're about 10 years away from our plan for a smallholding otherwise this would be tempting. It's a bit bigger in acreage than might be practical for us and not sure about taking on a seven acre wood but still...
