    Bright but cloudy morning here.

The dehumidifier arrived and it's made a huge difference. Worried about the leccy billd though.

Sold half a dozen eggs this morning. :D

No big deal, but it's a sign that the big post-moult lay-off is over.

For some reason that made me think of smallholding economics.

Recall one of those "idyllic" tv moves to Italy (I think) where the family harvest the olives at great effort and make a few hundred pounds from the pressings, while at the same time they are having to pay to send their kids to a school many kms away. No amount of soft focus filming could make the sums begin to add up.

At very best, if we sold our stuff, we might produce £1000 of surplus plants/produce from our plot, plus another £1400 from leccy generation. That might just pay for our council tax :(

Those of you with large plots might do rather better though :o

I remember that one! It did look lovely and, more importantly, warm! I much prefer warm weather and OH is still peeved that I made him leave Aus. We could have bought in Spain or Europe but this is a good compromise for us. We had to balance being near a school (the primary is 3 minutes drive away, even a few miles down a windy country path can add 30 mins to your journey, so proximity in time is important! There is a bus that stops outside the house that will take them to the secondary school in due course), we're near the village and some people (we have about six "near" neighbours - I don't like to be too distant), less than ten minutes to drive to the town and supermarket.

When I read posts on smallholding sites about how to make a living from smallholding, my heart sinks. I know you can do it, with a lot of hard work, but our priority is raising three young children at the moment, running a small business separate from the smallholding and doing a house refurb. These amount to a full time job and more. I've seen my MIL work on her allotment and that's a full time job. I've resigned myself to the fact that I won't be making any produce from the smallholding until the kids are at school and then I'll be pleased if we produce something to feed us, I fear self sufficiency is a bit of a pipe dream in our case, but this was something we were well aware of.

I mainly use this lot, CTC.
It allows for more localised & for long term - although that will change frequently as they update the info.
I've set it to Cardiff as I don't think that's actually anyone's exact area. Just change the Cardiff in the Search box to your home town/village.

If I got your area right, CTC, you have a high of 2C & a low of 0C on Friday (if you prefer F you can change the page to show that). It gives a mix of snow & rain.
