Happy Christmas all & all the best for the New Year.
It's been disgusting day here - icy rain & gales, but the stoves kept us cosy.
Hope Sam & Alfie have the water receding soon.0 -
Aflie...bloody heck.... good think you have somewhere for mable if things get worse....
we are off work for a few days ( well job and finish etc) so if you need any help PLEASE let us know, and if the roads are ok, we will come down to help...
its on times like this you just feel so helpless, reading/listening to whats happening to friends.
Sam.... have you got together with some of the neighbours to talk about this if things get bad? I dont want to sound down, but it might be worth taking things upstairs now... mainly the precious things that can not be replaced, photos, insurance docs...phone numbers... those quirky little things that hoard loads of memories...
I should imagine you do, but make sure there is fuel in your camper ..
kitten and stray and having a mad half hour, running around chasing and pouncing on each other, soooooooooooo funny..
heard last night on the national weather forcast warnings about possible landslides in the southe west:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:Work to live= not live to work0 -
Oh dear, it seems some of you are suffering more than we are now.:( The river here is back within its banks again.
However, the week's forecast for the Midlands is somewhat better than it is for Devon or alfie's area.
I think we shall be letting the hens back into the other part of their orchard, which is drier. There may be no crisis, but it's not very pleasant for them, wading in mud.
Totally puddinged-out. It's taken most of the day & evening to prepare, cook and eat Christmas Dinner, with a 5 hour gap between courses.
It's not rain in the midlands that is the problem, it's rain in the north west as when it falls in the peaks it fills the rivers up downstream. If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
It cant be fun worrying about potential flooding, especially when there is lots more rain forecast
And as CTC says, all this extra rain is causing more risk of landslips as well.
If and when we manage to get used to the extra summer and winter rain as the atmosphere warms, what will be next, more October 1987s?
On a brighter note the spring bulbs are starting to show0 -
My DD1 has to go back to Brum later today. She found it easier than normal to get here on Christmas Eve, so it seems clear the weather put many off travelling down here by car, even with the railway all screwed-up.
People are experiencing flooding differently, with those in the headwater areas subject to flash flooding, and those like Sam in the lower/middle reaches feeling the effects somewhat later, and probably longer.
I can see why sheep are good for the land. Out in the field it's squidgy, but reasonably solid, while in the hen pen the sub-surface is full of vole and mole tunnels, like an Aero bar. So, when I walk about there, I can feel these holes collapsing and I leave dents 3" deep. Of course, ATM, many of them are acting as extra channels for water.0 -
its making me think what the weather is going to be like in the spring? and if we are going to get any hard frost/snow?
up until a few years back, if we were going to get any snow it would allways be end january begining/mid feb dut now the weather just seem awol.... just wondering if its worth trying to sow/plant earlier than recommended?
Davesnave these sharkfin things:D when did you start sowing the seeds, also when did you open one up to dry out the seeds?Work to live= not live to work0 -

I don't think we can infer anything from what's happening now, so I wouldn't go overboard with sowing anything yet, except maybe cheap stuff that can fail without problems.
For example, I have Lucullus chard which has come on well under protection, so I am cutting that small for salad and sandwiches. When the time is right, it'll go outside, bulk up and eventually become standard fodder for the hens. They love their greens!
I also have some cut & come again stuff which is doing fine, some red lettuce that will be brought on early if we don't have any hard weather and some sorrel which we also put in sandwiches etc. So, basically the idea is to grow things that will get us through this difficult period without buying more supermarket salad stuff than we can help. But if it all fails....it's only pennies.;)
I am so tight, I let the Mizuna go to seed and collect those.:D I have a variety we like which is still producing in the polytunnel.
I havent scooped out any seeds from the sharks yet. That was RAS. I believe they need to have matured fully. I'll be doing some, but so far I've just used the less mature ones, as I don't think they will keep so long....0 -

Yea, depending on which side went we may end up with a view that includes Rhiwies or the lights of Cardiff & Bristol........ or both. :rotfl:
That is, of course, if the house is left at the top & doesn't go with the slide. There's even a 3rd option if its going to do that.
I'm almost past caring now. There's b*gger all we can do about it if it is going to go.

I'd have to be re-housed if still breathing :rotfl:
Friday looks like hell.
It's not what/when gets planted as seeds in pots that's a problem it's when it comes to being planted out. It mattered little what gets planted out if the ground is sodden & the water rots it, it freezes or there's not enough sunlight to make it flourish. You take a chance every year that Nature will get in the way.
I could plant something in one part of the land which succeeds & it would fail in another part. Different soils & circumstances
mean some of us will have things thrive & others will fail. You need to judge (read - take a chance) on being able to know your own land, weather etc CTC & act accordingly.0 -
Grim grey but not pouring here. Thank goodness!
Glad those ipn danger spots are ok. Will feel better when Alfie logs in to tell us she and mable and her animogs are not all in an ark she happened to have in a shed:) but home and dry or moved and safe.
We fou d a leak in our roof, dh is going to have to balance his way to the far ned of the attic over the insulation to stick a big bucket under it. The ceiling below has gone black with mould which i have not seen since we came here which makes me think it has leaked above there before, that ceiling is going anyway this next year, but the roof being redone is not on the plans. Might have to see if we can stretch to some leak patching now rather than a whole re roofing which I am certain we cannot afford.0 -
hope uv all had a great day

HERE IS A PIC OF THE "RIVER" RUNNING THROUGH AND OUT OF MABELS PADDOCK....:(
and my garden....:(
ive got mabel on the driest ground but have an evacuation plan.... des res at my friends place....:)
Oh dear. Looks like you'll be joining us in planting rice next year.
At least the slope here means we can release the water in most places (sorry, folk downhill) It's just that the water keeps coming.
The B Plan for Mabel is good, alfie. The main problem could be that her feet will be getting very soft which makes it so much easier to get cuts & infections etc.0
