Well, the wood pellet boiler has landed. But it's not going to be fitted by the end of the week. :( its immense. I am a bit worried the hot water cylinder is not going to fit in the space we have provided for it, if it does there will surely be a hairs breadth in it.

The boiler itself also looks huge. Bigger than the oil ones from fifties and sixties I am familiar with. But that very cheerful cherry red so many oil fired boilers are. :).

It feels so near yet so far.

Was reminded how gp,uh better I feel earlier, took the dogs out in the fog and a man said to be to be careful as a few people had been lost 'up the back' when he arrived. It's very difficult to get lost there IMO, because there are a few landmarks that once you get to them can tell you which direction to keep plodding in to get back to car parking area. Any way, I had a frisson of excitement at being lost in the mist, not a dreaded worry if I would get back to the car ok. :)

One of my concerns about wood pellet systems is the amount of space needed, both for storing the pellets, and siting the boiler.

We shall be seeing the architect this week regarding Plan B. Once we've thrashed that out, we'll know about the space available.

Then we'll be on to pricing....The whole refurb must cost less than £xxx, or it'll be a non-starter.

We're allowing ourselves to think the unthinkable in case Plan B can't be done within budget....:(

    What is the unthinkable?

I can get scale pictures for you when it's in if it helps. The pellet system requires MUCH less room than the logs, and the storage space not as bad either. But, I think we have allowed ourselves to be optimistic on our hot water cylinder placement mainly.

Get yourself a handheld GPS, they are cheap now, you can walk anywhere you want and it will still get you back to where you started.
Of course you will be relying on technology and it does sometimes go wrong. So take a compass and a map to be safe :)

What would worry me about wood pellet boilers, is that there can't be that many people making the pellets, it's not like it's normal wood so freely available. Cost could go up and availability go down.
But of course that could be my paranoid side talking :D
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.

I wasn't worried abut getting lost. I walk there in the mist often. :D

It's just nice to feel up to getting lost if it does happen. :D

I think pellet making could be a something positive for small industry in uk, even areas of smallholding, people with tree growing space.

The main problem for me is that ATM its not very green.......many pellets are shipped from Australasia. Mine are from not far away.....via somewhere up north  because distributors vary in price and those are the cheapest. That is crazy. Given time I will negotiate something better more locally, but as everything this year it's ended up as a bit of a last minute rush. :o
