Well, it's those grim dank days again. Tidied up the feed room and feed bins today and was too cold to be without jacket but sweaty within it. Horrid damp grimness.
The chooks were not let out until nine this morning, (fow weather this morning, grey, misty, camoflaging). And they are now tucked up again. One, brown egg.0 -
yep it is still solid fuel, and has a back boiler:D:D:T:T
ok it is not a super model, and does have old age signs on her, BUT it was free, a friend of ours fits wood burners etc, and was taking this one out of a house, and phoned us today, to say if we want it, come and collect it, so we did:p..
It will be a while before we are actually ready for it, but we have it,
right off to finish my cuppa:D
do you know how old it is?Work to live= not live to work0 -

One of my concerns about wood pellet systems is the amount of space needed, both for storing the pellets, and siting the boiler.
We shall be seeing the architect this week regarding Plan B. Once we've thrashed that out, we'll know about the space available.
Then we'll be on to pricing....The whole refurb must cost less than £xxx, or it'll be a non-starter.
We're allowing ourselves to think the unthinkable in case Plan B can't be done within budget....:(
Ridiculous. We have now scaled back to a house with sensible proportions. We were trying to squeeze in an annex for the olds but ti just doesn't make financial sense and we probably don't need five beds four baths and an office and a second lounge.....
We got a bit carried away, I think but we were expecting the architect to guide us a it more than he did.
As it stands, the cost for a full fit will be in the region of double what we have! We are hoping to save the best part of the VAt as the place will have been empty for two years before we start the work.
The heating system is the hige consideration. We have space for a ground source heat pump - but this is expensive and needs electricity to run. We need to look again at the wood pellet biomass boiler type thing. My head's fried today. I can't even type... although I have a spanky new wireless keyboard I'm pleased to report.
You should be hearing more from me now. The computer is in the caravan and if I ever get the energy to get up once I've put the girls to bed, this is where I'll be0 -

Honestly, if funds had allowed for capability for gshp with less disruption at this stage we would have loved that. As it is we are thinking to ground source via borehole. The gshp options here just did not seem to stack up.
For us, financially, to turn down the pellet boiler when they are effectively paying us to have it over time is a no brainer, because we can add to the system with other sources as we go along.
I have to admit I find this very, very scary. Ours is cheaper than original quotes by a long way froma local provider, but not a mainstream boiler name in uk. It could all go horribly, horribly wrong but we will see.
Looks like next Wednesday or tuesday now I think.
Doors arrived on site tonight and should go in tomorrow.:)0 -

I'd be a bit careful on what one pays for the old ones now. There's an idea going round that they run on wood. Well, they run - but pretty unreliably. Most were designed for coal/anthracite which runs hotter & is more controllable. I found this quote which pretty much sums up the wood/Rayburn (& presumably many other old range-type ovens) problem. Most Rayburns were designed for coal, and are best on it. On coal you can add 1 or 2 radiators to the figures given above for wood. Burning wood has to produce less heat - it has less calories. Cooking can be more hit or miss on wood depending on the quality of wood and how you fire it. My Supreme can get through 2 barrow loads a day, may be 4+ tons of wood in a 6 month season. That is an awful lot of collecting, sawing splitting and stacking. If you burn wood you must be poor, have a free wood source, and want to save the planet. Or you will soon get sick of it! sorry! Or maybe you just want to be warm and hang the expense- buy it in.0 -
