Not being on top of all the developments across the years, I'd be hard pushed to chose between any of the new heating systems. :o
I have absolutely no idea about any of the more modern ideas on heating but try to keep an eye on what they think the future of heating & energy may be.
I came across this document earlier in the year.
(Q10 refers to heat pumps & isn't encouraging.)
The Consumer Focus response made some interesting points. For example, in the mad rush to insulate homes & reduce heat loss the idea of ventilation seems to have become lost -not healthy for many reasons from the common cold to radon problems.
Radon under floors of old properties escaped through the chimneys & windows. Seal those & you need to install pumps to clear the radon.

I honestly don't know what the answer is & don't think anyone does at the moment. None of the new technologies have been used for long enough to know if they truly are all they were cracked up to be, Most seem not to live up to the hype.
Maybe we'll just have to swallow principles & go back to wearing fur in winter?
As most of the population lives in urban areas with electricity & gas on tap I think that most people will just go with what is cheapest/warmest for their purposes. They won't be too worried if those in the countryside make the right choices or not.

I'm sort of glad we're going through this at the same time.... The original costing for the raising the roof plan A was £400K

Ridiculous. We have now scaled back to a house with sensible proportions.

The heating system is the hige consideration. We have space for a ground source heat pump - but this is expensive and needs electricity to run. We need to look again at the wood pellet biomass boiler type thing.
    :D

The raising of the roof ball-park figure here was £90k, but allowing for contingency and the need to properly heat the place, that took us out of our comfort zone. :(

Anyway, Plan B is pretty much sorted now. It's basically sticking a bit on the back, doing away with the flat roof at the front, sticking another bit on an end and reconfiguring the bedroom end internally. :)

Like you, I suspect that we have one too many shower rooms, but we'll probably run the services there and just use it as a computer/office space with the potential to convert easily, if anyone ever wants to.

We will look into GSHP, as we have a large tract of virgin garden with no obstructions and plenty of contacts with diggers. GHSP gets pricey if you have to go the borehole route. Think ASHP is probably out, and where to put all the pellet stuff would also be a problem for us.

Are there any laws relating to the disposal of your own rubble etc. We have somewhere it could go and ....err....someone who might not like it going there!:rotfl:;)

What concerns me about GSHP, ASHP, solar etc is the need for electricity. In my apocalyptic worst case scenario, what do we do when there are regular power cuts? Hopefully, it won't come to that :o How prepared can one be? Has anyone looked at some of the Prepper sites in the US? They can get me, a worrier, all a fluster. I think we'll be looking at an adaptable system. Some Solar, perhaps a GSHP, a woodburner and major insulation. All very expensive....

While electricity supplies are much more reliable than they were 25 years ago I think you are still wise to consider what would happen during any prolonged outage, rozee. The winter of the year before we moved here there was no power for over 6 weeks. Luckily we haven't experienced anything that bad.
Should we believe the doom-mongers who speak of power cuts becoming regular events again then it makes no sense to be totally reliant on electricity - or any one source, come to that.
Of course, a good old generator always comes in to offset short term problems.

Hmmm.....my naughty doggies have eaten one of their leather sofas. Tbh it's becuase they have been bored rigid. They miss free access to the garden and have been very abandoned over summer, so they are not introuble.

It's grey dog dog, she has a thing about sponge (nicks sponges from the feed room all the time) and they had split the leather with their huge claws, which I was taping up, then she saw there was sponge inside.....abandoned all hope of keeping sofa then.
