Lir, for 4 years while our hedge regrew our back neighbours and us had no privacy. But time helps, even though its a shock to begin with. Must be worst with front hedge, but with a road at 1st floor level at our front, we can never get total privacy.
Choille, what a bummer! Its the lost opportunity to get stuff done that must be really galling.
Itsme, another negative with more landscape of same scene.
Not sure but I think you may well be right!!!0 -
pressed reply too soon....:o
i do hope dog is ok ??
poor choille...........i would tell em you are expecting a discount now for the loss on "wages" for the guy you had organised to put it up ... but couldnt !!
i have been to my parents today, my dads been in agony from his hip/lower back for 10 days now,[been told arthritus in the spine] slowly improving but not helped by builder faffing around re working thier bathroom into a shower [neither can easily manage a bath now]. i was just gobsmacked when last week i saw it in progress...."interogated" the builder, who says hes a plumber ???, the pipework is .......well.......there, ALL visible and apparently it wasnt countersunk in wall because "these houses are built so solid ,its difficult"..... then on monday i went there and he was saying that they[parents!] hadnt ordered the pedestal part for the sink. mum showed him the quote and guess what......oh yeh ! today i rang mum who sounded frazzled and so i shot over there only to find a huge seam open in the KITCHEN CEILING where water had leaked from upstairs airing cupboard, across ceiling, down kitchen wall, into hall fusing light switch.... apparently mum spotted it yesterday, yelled for the workman, he rang his boss who turned up [worker had turned water off by now] and found my mum ,81, on her hands and knees mopping water up off kitchen floor only to say "hey, youve got a swimming pool now" ......grinning ! my mum bless her launched into what she herself described as putting a screaming banshee to shame... he looked up and said "oh thats easy to fix" .......... :mad::mad::mad:
she told him they wont get a penny until she has had every aspect of the job independantly assesed. this was all arranged through an approved disability shop...supposed to ease the comfort of the disabled......
i cant sound off at then builders which im itching to do as the stress is already telling on M&D and nobody likes to feel foolish especially at thier age.
ive told them to get thier decorator chap, who they trust, to see what needs doing re the flood. then see what these builders say and compare. iv suggested they get THIER chap to do it and BILL the others but if they didnt pay up mum and dad would feel terrible...
i think im gonna go tomorow to see the shop and let them know what has been happening. i am not convinced this guy is a registered plummer...is it still corgi they have to be registered with ? i know they have to do update exams evry/every other year now.....anyone know ??
poor ma and pa have had to have strip washes for the last 2 weeks and dad is so not well....:( im really worried for him.
sorry to go on but had to let off steam....:o0 -
I came up with The Nidd at Knaresborough too....:)
Sounds like it's been a pretty poo day for some of you. At least roof sheets, paint and doors can all be fixed, given time, which is getting short again, but people & dogs take priority, so I hope the tests go fine for you choille and that dog-dog mends as well as she did last time.
Give them stick after the tests choille, not before! Special price?:D

Oh LIR. What a lousy dayI suppose the only thing to say is that misery loves company so, hopefully, with so many things going wrong today you've used up the bad quota for a while.

Corgi was always for gas, alfie. You don't say if gas work is involved.
The plumbing associations I know of are the Association of Plumbing & Heating Contractors (APHC) & the Chartered Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering.
I'd check whether your parents workmen are listed as members.0 -
CORGI has been replaced with Gas Safe Registered now, alfie, if there's gas involved.
More woes for your folks too! Is there something in the air today? I know you'll be on the plumber's case for them now, but it's a shame that such numpties are let loose on the general public, and especially old folk.
We have been very open to the neighbours ever since we got rid of the trees that were supposed to be a hedge, hemming us in. The beech hedge we planted is fairly shooting up, but it will be two more years before our friends next door disappear. Meanwhile, now the trampoline has lost it's shine (broody coop?:D) we hear talk of a climbing frame..... Oh joy!
I think I said that the neighbours' landlady got her son to chainsaw the leylandii hedge between us. He used his nose as a height guide, but fortunately he was quite tall. I think he did terminal damage in some places though, so I have already planted Cotoneaster cornubia at 2' intervals all along the back of it. That stuff grows at 3' a year and it stays pretty much evergreen, but best of all, it's free!0 -
Dave, when you plant like that do you put in any pipes to water low down? I have been told I should for the yew, especially near the lime tree. The yew is going in right next to a ditch, which I thought would draw roots down, but can see that will only be down to a new 'surface' so probably not that great for them.
We will be planting as soon as bareroots are in near us, but I have abpout eight in pots, small, about a foot, but thought if I put them at the yew end it might help counteract some of the imbalance likely to be caused in speed of growth.
What would you advise?0 -
I didn't put any soaker pipes around any of the hedges, but we've been pretty careful to water them in the very limited dry spells. I did put many barrowloads of manure under them when preparing, only to find that attracted the moles, which were after the manure worms!
As we have so many voles, mice & moles here, the ground is fairly riddled with holes, so I don't think it made much difference really.
We have a few yews in pots that we've 'acquired,' and the intention was to fill in gaps with those, but we've had few failures since planting the hedges - one to be precise. I would keep a few back like that though, just in case.
Our roots were huge after a year in the nursery bed, but we did lose a few in that first growing-on year.
I think your yews will get their roots down to ditch level eventually, but it will take a couple of years.0 -
Hi All, I'm gearing up to do an introductory Permaculture course put on by Aberystwyth Uni at Denmark Park in Lampeter. Hopefully it will give a bit of a boost to the planning stage of the garden.
OH is going to go on the far more fancy two week residential Permaculture Design Course with http://www.patrickwhitefield.co.uk/ next year.
Do you guys have any experience of courses or are you all hands on experience. Where did you learn what you know?
It's fascinating to me to watch how everyone else deals with learning about the land etc. Coming from the city and as complete novices really to even garden growing, we are going down the theory first route, but I know there's nothing like hands on experience, so I think it'll be time to dig in and make some mistakes come the other side of the half term holiday.0
