Dark this morning.....
She is eating well, and she often doesn't, infact after rice and chicken last night she asked for a meal in the middle of the night ( not like her at all) and also ate her breakfast, which she very often leaves or picks at.
It's frustrating, but I don't think it needs to be heartbreaking. She is an incredibly manipulative ( spoilt) hound and surprisingly intelligent, which is a wonderful thing usually, but makes keeping hr content while on bed rest harder.
This morning she will not widdle though, which worries me a bit. Soon my live in parent is going to take a shift with her and then I will have a shower and a kip,:D. I think she will be ready to sleep this afternoon, but I am only going to let her nap so that she sleeps through tonight
Dh said he will carry her upstairs tonight, but after tonight and her getting some decent sleep we will then enforce the normal 'rules' of downstairs sleeping before she gets to used to upstairs again.0 -
Poor dog, but as you say, you can't make a rod for your own back....
Snowing today so glad I can just slop about, no up at the crack & through to Inverness.
Ebay sales seem rather slow, but it's just relists so I suppose I can't moan.0 -
Children and animals, when they are very ill/badly injured, leave me with a feeling of helplessness that I cant wave a magic wand to take away pain and suffering
Weather getting colder, frost forecast, so will put some more bulbs in this afternoon, by the high fence and against DW's and DD2's orders, who want me cocooned in cotton wool to avoid more back problems so she doent have to return home in a hurry. Yesterday managed to plant all the rooted strawb runners, and also planted ornamental troughs by GH and front porch, so Spring should be quite colourful. Picked up a nice cast iron rain hopper last week and just debating whether to use it or list it.
Choille, also slow on the Bay, and I'm starting to scrape bottom of barrel again for stock, so we'll pop up to Ross nx week to buy and have a quick break. Hoping also to make a profit after fees on 9 lots entered into Carmarthen nx wed
Its the local food and drink festival here this weekend. This is one high street that seems to be thriving, lots of independent shops though opening of tesco extra, costa and waitrose (nx week) met with mixed reactions. Then there's the reindeer parade at end of November0 -
One of my daydreams has been achieved. I now have hens.0

Reading here about animals suffering and it is all so pertinent...my little faithful yorkshire terrier died in my arms less than 48 hours ago. It was unexpected, the day prior to her death she was her usual self, but the next day she bcame gravely ill and died just as we got to the vets that evening...the only appointment we could get. My heart is broken. She was devoted to me, and i called her my baby, because she was a big baby and followed me everywhere, 13 years old, so not a bad innings, but not long enough for my liking. I am filled with memories of her final day, struggling to live, terrifying to watch her suffering, knowing in my heart the end would come that day, talking to her through tears, trying to comfort her, telling her of the joy she had bought me, and the family, and how she was such a good girl and how i loved her.
I feel devastated. We have another dog, a collie pup about10 months old, so her cuddles help, but are bittersweet too.
I want to stop thinking of her wretching and writhing all that last day. I know i will eventually, but it still forms all my thoughts.
Only another animal lover would understand this post, i suppose that is why i post this here, though usually i only read this thread and rarely post in it.
My heart goes out to all pets/working animals who are suffering at this time, especially to those whose owners are irresponsible and uncaring and downright wicked and unfeeling.Grocery Challenge for October: £135/£200

RAS, appreciated your permaculture links. As you imply, food for thought & evaluation rather than slavish following, for me at any rate.
Hope dog-dog settles and finds some comfort soon.
Good luck also to CTC's pop-up shop. That might just hit the right note at this season.
Not much to report here. Plan B has arrived, but we still have reservations about a couple of things, which the architect has included, perhaps with the idea of making it more 'interesting.' We'd be happy enough now with 'boring but practical.' Maybe we are just difficult customers.:o I shall have to draw bits on and send it back again...:(
Just realised the telegraph pole taking the 'phone to Mr Dog has no wayleave agreement. It was placed there in 2006, but I can't imagine the previous owner here didn't notice, overgrown though the area was. In our time, Openreach have come in twice and done things there without asking, so they either didn't know who owned the land, or didn't care. Hmmmm. I shall be having another word and asking where the money is.....:cool:0 -
Sending you lots of hugs katholicos and hope you can eventually find some comfort in having had the companionship and love that your girl gave you. x0

The wayleaves around here changed a few years ago, Dave.
Both Electricity & phone use the same poles. Here the wayleave agreement was with the electricity board. Several years ago now, instead of paying tiddly squit every year, they made one large payout on a sort of "That's it you get no more basis".0 -

Thats roughly my view as well.
Finally accepted that the top narrow bed up against the high fence, south facing, trees/shrubs on other side is unlikely to be food productive (very dry in summer, competition for nutrients and invasive plants) so have put in spring bulbs with a long row of culinary sage grown from seed which can be cut back to shape as necessary. In summer I'll mulch with card/plastic to keep down the weeding and provide slowworm basking heaven and hopefully they will eat the slugs that would eat the strawbs in the bed just below. We'll see
Next year (after a year's break) I'd like to repeat growing squash on the compost heaps, so will diary March to top up heaps with the free municipal compost from down the road and top dress the strawbs. No room for sharks fins though
Nx weekend the guy is coming back to dig up and replant the rhubarb bed. There is bedrock here too close to the surface and it suffers in dry weather, so its going to a damper part of the garden.0
