I'm sure we going to see more of this. A significant part of our drive to move here was what some of our peers consider to by our slightly apocolyptic opinions on food production and the economy. I wonder when themainstream media is going to start talking about "Peak Egg" production :rotfl:

    I've been Money Tipped!
Mse was playing up for me from last night.

    Chooks all fine.

I have been trying to interest my dogs in ratting. They think i have flipped 'so now we are allowed to chase things? Its a trap, i will not kill the rat'.

Rainbow reins are great tools. I wish i could get webbing ones like that, rather than the full rubber coated, because they are superb training aids for people.

Shark fin melons, RAS is very kindly sharing out some seeds he has.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cucurbita_ficifolia

They grow huge apparently and are perennial in hot climates where they have no frosts.

Do they cross with the squash family I'd like to know, there seems to be conflicting advice about.

Based on experience since either 2008 or 2009 (not sure when Tommy sowed his first batch) it does not seems to hybridise with maxima, mixta, moschata or pepo.

The seed comes from a 2009 plant which was grown with Sweet Dumpling (well totally swamped Sweet Dumpling) and alongside some my squashes.

Seed sown from that has come totally true so far.

The 2010 plant I grew came from Tommy's seed that had been grown elsewhere amongst a load of Jamaican pumpkins. That came true as well.

RAS, if you are running out of sharks, I can send some up to choille. After all, I have plenty!:D

The seed is from a 2009 plant harvested 2010, so I want to get it out and about. Will be interesting to find out how it does in the north-west.

Spent the morning planting seeds. Nothing too ambitious as we're about to move soon, but satisfying nonetheless. :D

That's very good news, something else I don't have to worry about. I did find a very good page yesterday which definitely said crossing was not a problem.

Phew. Spent most of the day in danger of being blown off a ladder as we manhandled fascia boards, leading, brackets & guttering back into place. Feel like I've done 10 rounds with Ali :rotfl:
The rain passed through here overnight & in the early hours blown along at a fair rate of knots ;)

Hope the scan goes well, alfie.

Most people didn't realise that the Exmoor was once more endangered than the Giant Panda, choille. It's always great to see the herds out o the moor particularly when the young foals are around. They're really quite amazing animals - so well adapted to the environment they live in with their mealy mouths, toady eyes & double coats. If you see them in winter they can look like walking snow piles :D They're also one of the few pony breeds suitable for adults.

Were they detached by the wind, then? Not the sort of day for doing that voluntarily! :(

Went to Barney Rubble to do our fortnightly big shop, passing through two Mole Valleys in the way, if you see what I mean, because we picked up 6 bales of chicken shavings en-route.
The white town is one of the few places I can get my beloved laver too. :D

I don't think you're daft to put the staggering economy and food availability on your list of reasons to move rozee; they were certainly on mine! I know over the next few years I'll have to work a bit harder on making things last out of season. Meanwhile, we're still growing rather too many of the things that overwinter.....Parsnip & leek soup anyone?:o

Yes, but the winds a couple of days ago - not last night. We had to wait until tall ds was able to lend a hand. It was too long & high for 2 poor old s*ds to manage alone. DH fell off the ladder (luckily he landed in a bush :D) when we tried the first time so I said "That's it! We call in reinforcements" :D

Barney Rubble is going downhill fairly fast now. It was quite a lovely little market town when we first moved down here. Sadly, as with many towns, a great many of the little independent shops have gone & it's nearly all national chains. Why it needs something like 9 supermarkets I'll never work out. I miss the old cattle market, too.

I've just read Richard Heineberg's The End of Growth. Makes for slightly depressing reading, but nothing I haven't read before...

Parsnip and apple - makes good use of two things that are going over at the mo?
