If horses are so intelligent, how come you can't teach them to go in a corner?Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0

Well, they do try to keep it in fairly small areas. It's just that they have a few of those small areas dotted around :rotfl:0

Well you can, but it takes a while, and i can teach my horses, but paying guests might not be keen and also, a bloddy paint to get them coming, trained and then go again! Also, there will always be times it fails.....e.g. When they are excited. Becuase of our grazing system they are often a long way from where they would need to poop.
Left unbothered they do go in set places, called roughs and the bits they graze are called lawns. That is fine if you have a lot of land (in fact, imo its preferable for many reasons, and i would also prefer mixed species grazing) but its just not great for most uk set ups where we generally overstock land.
If and when i win the lottery i will buy enough land to creat park type grazing with roughs and lawns in a parasite light way....you see this on th national parks, and indeed in many horse places, the ones where they do not poo pick.0 -

I wouldn't mind about the increased quantity. And at least you can put it on the compost heap
Seriously, thanks for the info you two.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -

Oh, it's not that neighbour!....:rotfl: and by 'negotiate' I was referring to the bit tangled in the leylandii, which is perfectly secure ATM.
We will indeed bang in a corner post next to the existing one and leave them the old fence, putting new strainers at each end of the leylandii bit. We can't go around the trees, as that would put us way off line, and that's what I meant. It's a few bob extra, but it will get us out of a difficult bit.
I just hope they don't set fire to the compost bin again!:(
These neighbours don't have dogs, though they have a cat which is not allowed out, and 3 kids who are restricted to the garden, although we've got them to run about in the field a bit for about 10 minutes before now.....but it's s-c-a-r-y....'cos sometimes the parents can't see them!:rotfl:Not funny really, but if I didn't laugh, I might cry!0 -

is the world so different now? I don't think i would dream of giving children the liberty i had...in fact i think social services would be involved if i did, but some of the best days i had a a kid were me and a dog playing in the woods, orswimming in rivers and the sea. I got in ome near misses, but... Running in a well fenced field ....how old are they?0 -
Went up to the bungalow today. It was absolutely wonderful. Felt tearful as I looked upon it. I know I'm a sentimental old so and so. The land, not the building!
I sat in the dell and watched nuthatches do their thing as I listened to, well, not much really... the tinkling stream, a distant cockerel and the wind in the trees. Bliss.
I used my trowel for the first time. Just started clearing out the ancient green house so I can transfer my seedlings in due course. We're such a mismash right now. I salvaged some very old gear from the sheds that most people would call rubbish and then went to the local Ifor Williams dealership to research a new trailer. We're looking at a P6e, about £900 for a flat bed all purpose 6'6" x 4' trailer with some weld mesh panel sides. We can get a covered one that would be suitable for small livestock which is £1135 plus VAT. I've scoured the classifieds for a decent secondhand one but they don't seem much cheaper than a new one and if you factor in diesel when you collect it, probably the same. We've got the van being fitted with a tow bar on monday - can anyone see the need for a detachable tow bar? They're £100 more.
How do the Batesons compare Lucielle?
I've just realised, if we own a trailer, how close to steptoe and son I will become - I'll be giving alf a run for her money!0 -
Oh rozee, i am so happy for you.
Today was a good weeding day, got some long runs of elder root out, the ground is jus the right amount of moisture for it.0 -
