Wong item sent to buyer

I'm afraid they have you over a barrel. Why can they only get to a post office on a monday - is it benefits day?

I would be worried about sending another before getting the first back - especially as you did not send it tracked. If they needed the return postage up front - money must be tight - and they have the chance of a lovely £50 freebie staring them in the face.

Don't think you have much choice though - but send the 2nd tracked.

You could say the other item as also gone to the wrong person , and your waiting for that back too. But the longer you take - your feedback is at risk.

But as someone as said - its your error - not the buyers. Most are genuine - its just a risk you may have to take.

Jeepers, it's attitudes and experiences like this that make me think twice about using ebay. Buyer 1, minding her own business pays for an item and inept seller posts her the wrong thing, expects her to post it back and wait for the right thing to be sent out - hassle, inconvenience and aggro - and into the bargain another poster here makes a snide comment presuming they are on benefits. Nice.

Buyer 2 has also paid, and has had her item sent out to the wrong person. Presumably she's meant to wait now until her thingy has been argued over, posted back, posted on and delivered.

Neither of the buyers have done anything wrong - it's the seller who's madde a mistake. We're all human and mistakes can happen, fair enough, but to be honest, as a private seller I always think of ebay as being money I wouldn't otherwise have made. If along the way here and there I make a mix up, I think it's only reasonable that I take it on the chin and deal with it, without upsetting anyone else along the way. Most buyers and sellers are reasonable and honest, and do the right thing. Now and again, you get a wrong 'un, but this time the mistake's yours, you created the situation, you have to deal with it.

Sorry if I'm coming across as prickly, but the snidey comment irked me.

Let's look at it this way. You order a pair of shoes from a website. You receive the shoes and find that they are not the size you ordered.

Would you expect the retailer to send you the correct pair before return of the first pair? By the sound of some of the replies here, it seems like some of you would. Why is this situation any different? Apart from the fact I realised the wrong item was sent before she received it and notified her.

The buyer has paid for the item and receiving an item of the same value (although not the right one) so should return for an exchange for the correct one. I have provided return postage cost as it is not her fault/mistake but it is not my fault she can only post back on Mondays.

My listing does state, all items paid for on Sunday will be posted first thing Monday so for all she knows I might only be able to post Mondays too. Not everyone can get to the PO every day.

    Yes I would

If you hadn't made a mistake then when you can post wouldn't matter.
Some sellers bend over backwards to give the very best service possible. Others seem to think that they are doing buyers a favour by allowing them to buy from them.
You seem to have decided before posting exactly what you would do.

I don't follow your logic. If your buyer claims not to have received the package then you claim from royal mail. This has nothing to do with the ebay sale. If the buyer either does not send the wrong item back, or it is lost in the post on the way back to you and you don't send the right thing then she can still enter an ebay claim and get her money back.

How much will you mind poor feedback or stars?

No, I decided after I posted. I just wanted to know what others have done in these situations.

If you purchased an item in the shop, got home to find it was the wrong one you paid for. Would you return without the item and expect a replacement before you return the incorrect item - I hope not.

I am a buyer as well as a seller so can see it from both sides of the fence but maybe I am too understanding if I wouldn't expect a seller to send the correct item before return of the incorrect iem. I understand mistakes do happen and I am taking responsibility and correcting it - maybe not the way you agree with but not everyone agree's with posting the correct item before receiving the incorrect item back.

I have decided after I posted that I will at least wait until buyer receives the incorrect item and confirms it has been posted back. If it wasn't a high value item then I would of sent the correct item straight away.

This happened to me not so long ago. I bought a dress for a few pence, after two weeks it hadn't arrived so I emailed the seller. She apologised and said she would send it straight away, but it didn't arrive. Then a week later I got a coat with no return details and no indication where they had come from. Several days later I received an email from the seller telling me she had sent the coat by mistake and she would send me the top once she had received the coat back.

I asked her to send me the return postage but got no answer, so as I was going to be in hospital the next day for some time, I asked her to cancel the dress (which was now more than four weeks late) and said that I'd post the coat but expected her to refund the postage. The coat was heavy and cost £4 to post. She then refused to refund me on the dress saying I had no reason to cancel, but still didn;t send it and I had to open a paypal dispute to get my money back. I never got my money back for posting the coat back. So I was out of pocket by £4, and put to a lot of inconvenience.

I would never do a favour like that again for a seller. Sad to say, but true.

You should have requested the return postage up front. I offered my buyer the return postage upfront and as soon as she replied agreeing to send the item back, I sent the payment to her Paypal account. She now has the return postage cost before she has even received the incorrect item.

She might not receive the item or claim to not receive it so she then has an extra £1.58.

I assumed that it must have been before you posted as more people who gave a straight answer would not wait for the wrong item to be returned before rectifying your mistake. You are planning on doing the opposite.

If I purchased an item from a shop & got the wrong item, I would probably notice before I left the shop. If however I had got home, then of course I would take the item with me to exchange it, has the buyer suggested she will come to your house to collect the right item & then post the wrong item back to you at some time? If not I fail to see how this compares.

I wonder if you'll tell us if your stars are trashed & you get neg FB. If I was your buyer I would definitely be marking you down on all counts, except for description, if it matches up when the buyer eventually receives it.

I will report back and tell you all if my stars are trashed and if I receive negative feedback but thankfully my buyer seems very understanding so I would be surprised if she did leave negative feedback. She has already said I do not need to appologise as she understands mistakes do happen.

I assume you would also trash a sellers stars and leave negative FB if there was another buyer involved and the seller had no other option but to wait for return of the incorrect item from buyer 2 before sending it on to you.

I know you can't change what's happened, but when I've sold stuff, everybody that's paid gets their item sent 1st thing in the morning and if anyone else pays that afternoon then it's tough. I would not be rushing to the post office again that day or texting anyone to send it in a rush, I have a deadline and stick to it, the item would be posted the next day.
