  • Just picked up this 2004 Focus 1.6 Zetec for £430 with 11 month MOT. It's got moon mileage (145,000) and scratches just about everywhere but atleast it is clean which was a bonus! Came with no service history apart from one stamp in the book from 2005 but I've been lead to believe the recent owner who traded it in was a "technician" who serviced it himself throughout his ownership. 2 owners from new! Oh and it's got the worse steering wheel I've ever seen!

Just an update on this MK1 Focus, I sold it to a friend 2 and a half months ago for the same as what I paid for it and it's still going strong. He has done well over 2K miles in it since including a few 350 mile round trips. It's never needed any repairs or money spent on it yet since I originally purchased it in February. I now wish I had kept it! Ultimate bangernomic!
Just an update, my mate who I sold the 2004 Focus Zetec to last June had it MOT'd last month and it passed first time with just a couple of advisories for a track rod end and brake pipes being greased (which were on the last MOT). Ultimate banger motoring for another year!

He also had it serviced and 2 new tyres a couple of months ago too.

Just had a pleasant surprise - just checked the Fusion's MoT and it's not until mid-April when I thought it was March... however I will be taking it the month in advance just to make sure ;)

Total spend to date is...hang on...

£778 after the wheel bearing being done in Sept.

We'll see what this MoT brings, but not expecting much if anything.... at £30 p.a. tax, under £180 to insure and 60mpg it's deffo a keeper for a few more years :)

I’m predicting you’ll get it through for £105 including the test fee.

I recon it'll be less....fee at my garage is £35, and other than buffing the headlights I don't think it'll need anything. But don't worry, I'll report back ;)

  • You can get very cheap wheel bearings from ebay with no name, but I would make sure it is a named wheel bearing, especially if you intend to keep the car.

But £778 is a good deal.

It's not bad so far.....It's still got aways to go to match the last one though (about 2.5 years and about £120-odd left for repairs in that 2.5 years). Mind you, I don't mind if the repairs go a bit above that £120 target in the timescale, as it'll still be only £300-odd per year including buying it :)

Like many on here I run old cars for both pleasure and bangernomics, ofren I am dissapoiunted if I don't have the oldest car in the car park, one of the best bangernomics cars ever I should add MK4 Golf, beat others IMHO because of the amazing rust protections,

Am I though the only one annouyed at new car prices allowing some to have run a new car for 3 or 4 years for effectively free ?

Most won't run effectively for free though.

I'm currently running an Ioniq electric, the cost to me (after discounts) was just under £30k.

Not sure how long I plan on keeping it yet as I'm not sure what my long term plans are yet, but definitely it's not worth £30k now and won't be when I get rid of it.

Mom at the moment has a Chevrolet Spark, she paid £3k for it about 4 years ago (it's a '13' plate). Not quite in bangernomics territory, but she'd likely get more of that back both as a percentage and amount than I will for the Ioniq when it comes to selling, and her average mileage (working for the NHS between 2 sites) is currently a lot higher than mine is, with a lot more of that paid by business expenses. Cash operating costs excluding depreciation have been around 12p/mile for her, and I'm not sure that even with the lower running costs of an EV I will be able to get into that ballpark.
