Another year of cheap motoring, the 20 year old Golf passed the MOT but advisory needed a set of rear brake discs and pads, total cost £43. That's £1 less than the MOT cost me!

Looking online at other cars it seems that Bangernomics is a bit more tricky with the current new car issues. Similar cars to mine are silly money when the cars are far from perfect. One at £900 with no MOT, another nearly £600 when it's an insurance write off with side crash damage. To me neither are worth much more than scrap with the issues, they could be put back on the road but with the cost and risk involved they'd need to be much cheaper for me to want to do it.
That's why I'm keeping my 'old', it's not that old in my opinion but our throwaway culture decrees it ancient, banger.  To replace her with a similar mark 2 Focus would cost far more than I'd be willing to pay for such a car, if that makes sense.  If the car was written off, for example, I'd probably have to buy a mark 1 instead.  It's absurd.

MK1's are starting to get a cult following and the earlier the better! #keepyoureyespeeledforansreg (on twitter) :D
  • Selling a banger on Gumtree is horrendous. So many time wasters. I imagine Facebook etc will be as bad, I can’t face using my deactivated profile to list it there.

I've driven both Mk1 and 2 Focuses fairly extensively and can see why.  The Mk1 is a nicer looking car externally and internally.  It has character, which the cooking versions of the Mk2 lack.  The Mk2, however, bests the older one when it comes to the petrol engines, interior ergonomics and gearchange; I always found the change on the early cars' heavy duty 'box a bit clunky.  I've never been able to make my mind up on the handling front.  Both are exceptional, all things considered.  Most claim the Mk1 to be superior, but I sometimes feel the Mk2 feels more sure footed, perhaps because it's wider.  Who knows?

Incidentally, I have actually owned an S reg Focus: a navy blue 2.0 litre Ghia saloon.  Long scrapped further to electronic failure and general decrepitude.  As with so many things, I will be wishing I'd kept and restored the car in years to come!

I like my MK3 TDCI but I also love my MK1 1.6 Ghia for nipping about town. It's a real hoot!

Facebook is full of nuggets asking "Is it still available?"

Well yes it is... If it wasn't I'd have removed the ad. Doh!

Yeah, I’m persevering with only Gumtree, can’t face listing it on Facebook as well.

Yebbut, there are so many nuggets who forget to remove the ad once the item is sold.
    I always ask.

Yebbut these ones are never to be heard from again after my initial reply of Yurp, or if they do it's to ask what my best or last price is. Come and look at the car if you are serious and genuine. Don't try and negotiate price over Messenger.
