Your Bangernomics successes

My Kia has gone to the great scrap yard in the sky.
I took a critical look knowing at some point I will be commuting again, I've moved and my commute time / distance has increased. Then I weighed up how much the guaranteed repair bills were each year and didn't think it was viable for another service / repair bill, especially as I've already had it welded once.
Whilst I've moved away from bangernomics as my new car is 6 years old, I'm following the spirit and keeping it going as long as I can. In the interim I'm offsetting the cost of no tax, cheaper insurance and better petrol consumption, therefore saving £500 a year. Depreciation isn't a concern as I usually scrap my car when it's end of life.
I've had a lot of fun with my old cars over the years and still recommend bangernomics as a (usually) cheap way of mobile independence.

I too am a big fan of bangernomics but that journey ended abruptly yesterday when my good old reliable Citroen failed it's MOT miserably. My plan was to put 12 months ticket on it and sell for around 500-600, I 'believe' it was worth around that and mechanically it is/was sound with the amount I've put into it on maintenance.
Well my mechanic came back in it and drove it straight on the ramp, jumped out and told me it had failed and wants welding work. He showed me the problem by pushing his finger through both sills, they are like papier mache. I asked about the cost of replacement sills and he said around £125-£150, not bad I'm thinking until I get a price from the nice scrap man who offers £323 for car and as a bonus I sell the alloys to one the chaps for £50. So my 'old faithful friend' is going to the scrapyard, I'm getting out of it with a fair amount of money and best of all no tyre kickers to deal with.
I paid £500 for it in march 2016, have spent around 2k to 2.5k maintaining it and it's served me well, is an annual cost of around £600 including cost of purchase bangernomics success?, I don't know but it feels good value to me.
Anyway off to sunny Scotland next week to pick up the new one which 'good or bad' is not in the bangernomics category as it's only 5 years old.3 -

As a slight aside I was quite surprised by the £323 scrap value price, that is a strong bid imo and I might have only gained an extra few quid by having it welded, re-tested and then selling. My mechanic agreed with me.2 -
What car was it? I'd assume the scrap quote expects it to have wheels.

Deleted_User said:Just picked up this 2004 Focus 1.6 Zetec for £430 with 11 month MOT. It's got moon mileage (145,000) and scratches just about everywhere but atleast it is clean which was a bonus! Came with no service history apart from one stamp in the book from 2005 but I've been lead to believe the recent owner who traded it in was a "technician" who serviced it himself throughout his ownership. 2 owners from new! Oh and it's got the worse steering wheel I've ever seen!5

Week before my MOT and the Banger's brakes have started rubbing, hopefully not too expensive.
In other news, the wife and I were looking online at cars...the prices are literally CRAZY!
The two Bangers which have their MOT's in September and October are staying put, we were actually thinking along the lines of trying to get at least two more years out of one and three out of the other - time will tell!1 -
I’m back in the world of bangers. I sold my E Class as it has become an expensive ornament on the driveway, around 1000 miles over the last year. My son was given a Seat Ibiza from my wife about 5 years ago and decided that due to WFH and only a few hundred miles since last MOT he no longer required a car. Probably the fact it needed an MOT, service and insurance swayed his decision.
Upshot is we welcome the 13 year old Ibiza back into the fold. MoT and service cost was £155. New tyre and a puncture fixed and it will be useful when needed. Insurance will be over £400 cheaper than the Mercedes. It has been in a few scrapes since he was given the car. A good wash, clay, polish and wax and it was like a new car, well almost. 😅Mortgage free

That is the Yaris banger through its MOT until 15th October 2022, it needed a coil spring. the brakes just needed a wee clean to get rid of brake dust.
Decided to tally up what I have spent on it:
2020 - total of £485 which was a service, mot, 2 x drop links and 2 x O2 sensors.
2021 - total of £320 which was a service, mot, exhaust back box and a coil spring.
Really happy with those figures and loving not having a car payment.3
