There are plenty of bangernomics vehicles avaibale at the likes of copart and IAA, mainly old hondas where the damage is stolen catalyst (£250-£300 repair), i managed to get a 07 Auto Jazz from IAA for £230 plus cost of catalyst its come to just short of £500 for a car with 68k miles and full service history from Honda Bristol. Making a lovely run around for the missus (just need something to protect the undershield now)
Why are all these cats getting stolen? And why are they getting rid of the car through auction for the sake of buying a new cat for £250-£300?

I've had 2 cars in the past that required new cats due to rot and I didn't just get rid of the cars, I replaced the cats like you would with any repair.
The Catalysts are stolen due to the minute amount of precious metals in them and easy access on these older cars to cut off with a electric saw then sell onto unscrupulous metal traders. The insurance companies can only use manufacturer parts instead of 3rd party which results in the vehicle being wrote off as the value of the part is more than the vehicle (a Jazz original Catalyst from Honda is £1.2k, used ones around £120 from scrappies and new 3rd party £200 ebay)
Crazy money. I'd just buy a new 3rd party cat and keep the car rather than take the insurance payout which will probably be low anyway. Unless they are worried it will happen again.

Picked up a 57 plate Aygo for £1300 with 70k miles. Not strictly bangernomics but close. Did a £20 oil change and buffed up the headlights. Cheap as chips to run.

Can’t  go wrong with a small Toyota like that.

Yep. Keep it under £1k please. Ideally under £500. Has the bar been set at 1k

A thousand quid car in 2012 would be equivalent to 1207 now.

Since Covid, used car prices have shot up at both ends of the market.

Even my non-bangernomic I bought for £6K from a trader in Oct 2019 is still fetching the same price on AT with similar specs while also being 18 months older.

The criteria were set out by the OP:
Being of limited budget but a growing fan of “Bangernomics” (old banger cars + economics) I have decided to catalogue my experiences of running a sub £1000 car and I would like you to share your experiences if you are doing the same

Although, if we consider inflation from the beginning until now:
A thousand quid car in 2012 would be equivalent to 1207 now.

  • So, is the bar officially £1207 now then?

According to BoE Inflation Calculator £1,000 in 2012 is £1,207.60 in 2020 - they don't have 2021 yet.
But, the OP was February 2012, so do we need to add a bit to account for the extra few months of this year so far?
Is the idea a dynamic threshold, bearing in mind the OP was being generous having started with a £495 Rover 600?

There is a nice simplicity to the £1k and this:
It amazing what is out there, just pop your post code into Autotrader, http://www.autotrader.co.uk/ set the distance at just 10 miles and hit search. Spoilt for choice and all of it is a bus ride away.
