^ If you open the water when the car is warm it will hiss, same on any car.
  • sorry lee, I meant after I topped up the car, drove the 10 miles then came back and opened the bonnet again.
  • Probably a temp sensor not kicking the fan in or fan just broken altogether.

Also the mayo under the oil cap, everyone knows that trick now and if someone was selling a pup they just wipe the cap clean before buyers turn up.
  • hence why I checked the dipstick and also had a good look down into the valves and its deffo black.

do you know if theres a separate switch for the fan as I always assumed it was controlled off the thermostat somehow? Then saying that Im not sure if theres and electrical wires on my focus's thermostat housing

OK I found it had about 2 litres of water missing. Havent seen any leak onto the floor in 24hrs. Heater started to work normally again and took it for about 10 miles. Seems to be ok except when you stop. left it for 2 mins to idle and gauge started creeping up again! haven't seen the fan cut in at any point. Also noticed hissing sound coming from expansion cap.

The expansion tank cap should not hiss if you have the coolant at the correct level, usually half way up the tank to allow for expansion. You may simply need to new cap?

2002 picasso 2.0hdi. Bought in 2010 for £800 for a cheap commuting car and weekend family car. Just spent my first repair money on it ..... crank shaft pulley replaced for £66 as it was a bit rattly. I hope that'll be all for the year. I might treat it to its second oil change since buying soon.

1 oil change in 6 years? Not something I'd recommend if you're looking to keep it running long term!

I got a 25 year old old Daihatsu Sportrak last year, had 10 months MOT, 70000 miles (confirmed with old MOTs) for £325. Spent a bit on it, bodywork needed some treatment, alternator needed repairing (£50) but flew through MOT in Jan. Got 5 nearly new tyres of ebay for £50 + £7 each fitting.
