Thanks to bangernomics, it's good to know that so many usable vehicles have been kept on the road instead of being scrapped0 -
I would just like to give a shout out to my lovely old car (bit banged up on the outside now) which is 18 years old this year.
Bought at 5 years old for £2400.
Average maintainance cost per year around £200 plus MOT.0 -
OK took the punt and got it for 340 ( 34 back for recycling micra )
Fingers crossed all ok.
Took for a couple of mile drive and noticed the following.
Brakes don't feel all that sharp but I suspect that's cause theres new front pads done for the MOT.
Kickdown quite laggy but got better once warm. Pull through the box fine when you drove it though it seemed.
Notice a gauge that we wernt too sure about but turns out to be an oil level gauge? According to some forums that is supposed to stay off once the ignition has checked itself ( to be fair I didn't know to look for this when I turned the ignition on! ) but that would seem daft that it would sit in the 'danger low oil level' area? I didn't recheck the dip stick but he tells me theres deffo oil in there, so maybe the forum is true or the gauge is stuck?
I had a quick look underneath ( this was after we got backand it was in his garage ) and there was some cardboard underneath that looked wet. The old guy told me that where his wifes corsas leaking so we shall see.
On the plus side it was apparently an old girl who stopped driving. The book has loads of stamps up to 41k/2010 and thers only 55k on it now.

Would be interesting to hear how it pans out. I like old cars.consumers_revenge wrote: »OK took the punt and got it for 340 ( 34 back for recycling micra )

Renaults have had that oil level check gauge for decades.
If memory serves it lights up when you switch on the ignition and then goes off after you start, then does nothing that I can remember till you start the engine again.
The wife's Clio (mk3) had a digital version which did exactly the same when you started the car.
They were both pretty accurate.0 -
Cheers. It's a gauge, looks like the same thing as a water temperature gauge not a light.. Are we on about the same thing please?0

This...The lower price of steel has encouraged people to export scrap cars to sell parts, while unofficial methods are causing problems for legitimate companies
Of course, the penalties will be dressed up as being for everybody's good and "Socially Responsible", but in reality, as usual, it will be just another special interest group protecting its assets and earnings.

I have a '98 yaris 1.0vvti that i bought for £180 from the car auction 3years ago, i use it purely to drive back and two to work so i don't put miles on my decent car.
It has passed the mot first time every year since owning it and starts first time every time
It's had a back box (£20), rear spring (£15) a window switch (£5) and a service (£40) and thats all. Cheap motoring0 -
Guys,
The car is good but has an issue, anyone shed any light please?
The temp gauge is climbing way into the high area, so much so that the temp warning lights come on. Could smell coolant at this point.
The car has no probs idling, no white smoke whilst still and when I check before sale no mayo on the oil cap. When I releases the water cap when warm I could hear pressure there.
However heater is stone cold unless the temp gauge drops a bit then heating goes warm for a while then cold again as it climbs. I thinking some kind of sticking thermostat issue?
Hoping I've not just done me money in.

OK I found it had about 2 litres of water missing. Havent seen any leak onto the floor in 24hrs. Heater started to work normally again and took it for about 10 miles. Seems to be ok except when you stop. left it for 2 mins to idle and gauge started creeping up again! haven't seen the fan cut in at any point. Also noticed hissing sound coming from expansion cap.0
