Your Bangernomics successes

I'd love to have an old SAAB, maybe even older then that. I was under the impression they were common stock at auction but never saw one (years ago) and ended up with a Honda with a much better insurance group, etcyeah the HDI lumps like a regular oil change
Is that because its the newer injection diesel type. My old banger used to leak oil so often I had no choice but to keep changing the oil
Just had the curious case of someone selling a Micra no mot for 300 with 110k miles and then also a Honda civic with similar miles, full mot history etc no faults for exactly the same price. Both over ten years but basically no reason not to run them on, nice bargain for the seller and buyer in each case I think there0 -
Bought a new car, 2008 207 HDI so I probably no longer qualify for the bangernomic badge anymore, well not for a few years anyway.
Will be listing my old 2001 Megane on eBay soon as i've had no success with Gumtree so far.0 -

My 16yo Saab is in for MOT tomorrow...I'll let you know then!
As soon as she's had a new drop link fitted the old girl will be good for another 12 months
Just a couple of advisories, indicator bulb losing it's orange colour & a chip on the windscreen.
Not bad at all.Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -

Have a look at Saab specific sites, http://www.uksaabs.co.uk/UKS/index.php?sid=1a7feec4ced1a317f49c167151b62d10 is ok & has Saabs for sale.parking_question_chap wrote: »Cool.

They get bad press from some but I've had two & they've been the most reliable cars I've ever owned. The one I've got now I've owned for about 7 years & has now covered 175,000 miles ish, it's broken down once during that time when the serpentine belt snapped. Last MOT cost me nothing, this one less than £100....good going for a 16 yo car.Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -
Big fan of bangernomics, I've been buying and running cars without suffering more than a few hundred quid in depreciation (often even making a profit) for several years now after a painful and fault filled 4 year spell with a nearly new BMW 3 series cost me £11.5k in depreciation and many a painful garage bill.
1st followed a Toyota Avensis bought for £1250 and sold 3 years later for £850
Next a £500 Peugeot 306 sold for £750 a year later
A £3,000 Mondeo with 17,000 miles was run for 6mths and flogged for £3,500.
Astra 1.6 SXI bought for £1,000 and sold for £100 more after a year.
A Mazda MX5 bought for £1475 then sold after two summers worth of B road fun for £1600.
A Mitsubishi Carisma 1.9 DiD bought for £700 and sold for £1,000 after 9mths, though it did cost me £300 for a service and a few minor repairs.
Currently a 2001 Ford Cougar V6 with 88k a full history and flew through an Mot needing only break pads bought for £300!
Buy wisely, buy with resale in mind, go for condition and history over age, keep it mechanically simple, drive a hard bargain and you can run a car on next to nothing. Well accept for the 25mpg thirst the Cougar has...0 -
My £500 Golf TDI just passed MOT for another year with no advisories. I had to get cambelt done this year but that's routine maintenance on any car.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0

On the subject of the TDCi/HDi lump.
You see vans such as the Berlingo with 350k on them at four years old that have been up and down the motorway all day and they are on the original engine.
Then you see people that have something like a C Max, Focus, 207 or 307 and they have loads of problems with the turbo.
I don't think that is a coincidence.
The engine is not bad but it seems very sensitive to poor quality or erratic maintenance. And then you get the build up of carbon in the oil feed pipes.
I think there can also be problems with injectors but you would need to research that as I am not sure.
If fuel quality significant?
Does using cheap diesel make a difference?
Who knows for sure.
I would personally do a half normal interval oil and oil filter change.
Clean oil has never damaged an engine as far as I am aware.
Back to the subject of Bangernomics.
I have been tempted to buy an oldish S Type Jag to see if one can be used for Bangernomics.
The Berlingo has been fine but has had a hard "London life"
Just about to go past 44k, when it had 27k in November, again mostly Urban miles.
Was decent value for a low miles 07 Berlingo Multispace only by a mates family from new.
But it needs some jobs done now, had an oil leak just starting on purchase which is either the head gasket or rocker gasket (both common with the TU3), the clutch is high and starting to judder occasionally, the bodywork has a few parking dents and scuffs as is typical of many London cars. Cambelt is due in April.
Cost £1000 and is likely still worth the same.0
