    Does this count a success?

    Bought a 1997 Clio in July 2004 for £750

    Sold it yesterday for £75

In all that time there was no major expenses, went through the MOT every year, needed a bit of welding some years and obviously new brakes etc. Think the exhaust was changed at some point too,

Average annual cost has probably been around the £100 mark.

Was actually sad to see it sold, but thankfully they are keeping it on the road, hope the new owner gets another few years out of it

19 y.o Skoda Felicia - whistled through the MOT last month with just two minor points noted. Tester apparently commented that he'd 'park it in a container for a few years' when examining the underside.

20p/mile running costs - virtually nothing can't be DIY'd on the car. 40mpg, 24,000 miles between the last two MOT's. Never missed a beat - truly one of the best cars I have owned in that respect. Yes, it's basic, and a bit underpowered, but the pure costs of running more than make up for the lack of electric everything and powered everything else that tends to go wrong so often and write off the older cars..

Bangernomics is similar to buying French cars sometimes.

    The simpler the better.

Which may well explain why Dacias are so common in North Africa. And actually more common than you might think in Germany as utilitarian or business vehicles.

I'd have another S Type in a flash. Great cars. Plenty around. Try to get a post facelift 2002 onwards model.

I've had a handful of S Types - varying between £700 and £1200 from memory..

I suspect I will be buying an S Type sometime in the next few months.

I didn't really like the front initially but it has grown on me over the years

But value for money is unrivalled.

£100 road legal car on Top Gear (old episode). The Rover on there is quite like my old one

  • Finally sold the old Megane end of last week for the princely sum of £200. Sad to see it go but in away I am pleased because it cost me loads in repairs and fuel. :)

Personally, I have never been able to change my view that they look like an elegant car at the front of which someone has thrown a large cow-pat. :(

Almost another Edsel - almost. :rotfl:

Not sure if Scooby would like to be referred to as a 'banger' but it cost me less than £1400* (& a few hours fettling)

MOT prep** was 7 miles at 4500 rpm in third ;)

    Passed, with no advisories.

CO 0.020% (required 3.5% or less)
HC 176 ppm (required 1200 ppm or less)

    Total costs for 1 year

Depreciation - nil (12yo car, apparently worth more than I paid for it a year ago - similar model/year/mileage on well known cartrader site at least £1k more than I paid)
    Tax - £295 (Subaru AWD)
    Insurance - £315
    Fuel - £1224
Servicing £85 (and I have 12-15 litres of oil left for the next 2 services: doing your own maintenance saves a fortune)
    MOT £30.50

To say I'm content is an understatement. :j

    * realistic cost was approx £1000 to £1100: but instead of selling the Megane it replaced (120k miles, 56 weeks MOT - value £300 -£400?) I gave it to my mate's daughter as she needed a car but couldn't really afford one. (Mate does the majority of the maintenance (but doesn't charge), knew the car & knew it would be ideal for her so he paid half her insurance)

**not strictly true - we do rolling maintenance on our cars, checking/fettling each one about every 6 weeks. Part of the £85 cost was £12 for a steam clean (we only have cold washers). If anything the cars are 'over maintained' if there is such a thing.
