Going to jack car up tomorrow and take a look. Don't think I'll be able to fix it myself as I don't have any axle stands and ain't hanging around under a car only on a trolley jack.
Thanks anyway, but least if I know for sure am less likely to get ripped off at a garage.0 -
Another Volvo opinion needed here as I never owned one.
Thinking I might look at large bills for my ever reliable 2003 VW Passat PD 1.9 130 as we approach the 320k milestone, Just noticed a private seller in my neck of the woods asking for £1200 for a 55 reg Volvo V50 2.0 D with 135k on the clock, 7 month MOT.
Like said above, I never owned a Volvo, I need rig that will cost no more than £500/year to maintain, should I look or are these a waste of time?Five exclamation marks the sure sign of an insane mind!!!!!

Whats up with the Passat?
Done discs and pads on mines, and bought a kit to replace all the front end arms and bushes (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-PASSAT-1996-2000-AUDI-A4-A6-FRONT-SUSPENSION-LOWER-TRACK-CONTROL-ARM-KIT-/321858893792?fits=Model%3APassat&hash=item4af048f7e0:g:IB8AAOSwQPlV7zmF).
Think parts were under £250 all in, and the difference it made to the car is amazing.
Just incase you're thinking of getting rid because of a build up in knocks, rattles and vague handling.0 -
Yes, some knocks when turning left in 2nd or first, done the front end arm nearside in the summer for £120. Sound I might need a new exhaust as I am still on the original and a bit noisy at first and second, or when driving slowly, nothing when above 50 mph.Five exclamation marks the sure sign of an insane mind!!!!!

A V50 is just a posh Focus so most common Focus problems apply.
A common issue on the V50 is the heater fan, they are a common failure meaning you have no fan whatsoever. The part is around £200 if I remember correctly, I still have a brand new in the box motor in the garage as I sold my V50 before fitting it.
Part from that they are pretty solid if maintained properly.
There is no lift pump on the 2.0D so it is a pain to bleed through after running out or changing the fuel filter.
Apart from that all I ever did was oil and filter changes in nearly 3years. Was a high miler to start with, 101k in just over 3years and it was on over 150k I think when I sold it I honestly can't remember.
Cambelt interval is quite long, I think 125k or 10yrs so I would budget for that as it is unlikely to have been done.
A 55plate 2.0D shouldn't have a DPF either. If they are used near the sea then the outer skin of the back box can rust through, it still passes an MOT as it is double skinned but looks unsightly.0 -
front fogs now work on the scenic.. cleaned the crap out of the connections and replaced a bulb...
front discs look a little sketchy but it came with a set so will do them when weathers a bit betterSealed pot challenger # 10

3 car problem solved, the OH put one in a ditch this morning.
Don't think it'll take much to write it off, but I don't think I'll be able to palm her off with the Passat either.
I'll need to encourage the bangernomics ethos.
Edit :- Out the blue she's just said theres no point buying another car just now, she'll just use the Passat (although it's going to cost me a valet). :j:j:j0 -
Just had Megane in garage to look at the exhaust. Says it is rotten from the flexi down and will be roughly £200 to fix. LOL.0

Surely it's still worth doing, £200 for another years motoring.
A friend took her A3 through rather a deep puddle yesterday. Hydralocked the engine. Car written off, fortunately insurance to pay out.0
