Well, I'd look up typical DMF failure mileages and roll the dice.0

A around £2500 I'd say that's a good choice0

Frankly in bangeromics world, the 05 Octavia of choice would be an ex-taxi and be around £500-600 up and running. Everyones going to assume its a taxi anyway.0

I've seen them for sale on Ebay, for ~£20 (Third party), but, Car Transplants say they have them in at regular intervals, for ~£20. I'll hold off for an official one, I think.
I used to buy genuine second hand mirrors off eBay for about £20. Usually from breakers yards who sell on eBay or random people breaking a car up.0 -

Although the bids are heading out of my bangernomic price range.0 -
There's currently an 08 white one at £595 as a classified near me. They often go for even less too. Decent operators actually look after them and only dispose of them when they get too old for their local authorities liking. Burst drivers seat and a certain aroma to add to their charm0

This is perhaps a story of how not to buy a banger even though over three years since I bought the car, the maintenance cost per year has been about £200.
The car in question was bought three years ago. It is a 2001 Citroen Xsara and it cost me £700. Due to severe financial problems at the time that was the first banger I had bought since I was in my twenties. Although it had a years MOT when I bought it and seemed clean, it was a bad buy I have to admit as it was bought in a hurry because the MOT of my existing car was due to expire in a few weeks and my mechanic told me that it would not pass the MOT and was not worth fixing.
Now back to the car I bought three years ago for £700 and its problems that I would encounter with it. It had just been MOTed so after 11 months I took it to my mechanic to get it prepared for the MOT. He told me it was not worth fixing as it had an oil leak which was due to a blown head gasket and various other things that needed fixing. Anyway, I managed to calm the mechanic down and go through all the items he said that needed done and eventually got the work done for about £500. That might seem a lot to spend on a banger costing £700 but it was cheaper than buying another banger and possibly buying more trouble and to be honest I just did not have the money to buy a non-banger.
Anyway, after that I decided to do all my own repairs and I have since put it through a two MOT tests. I have had to do a few repairs but have spent about £100 in total since that £500 bill from my mechanic.
So it is three years driving for about £200 per year on maintenance and a full years MOT's still left.
As I have said, this is a story perhaps of how not to buy a banger. The lesson for me is not to buy in a hurry.0
