    9-5 Aero.

    What's it like to drive?

It's all about opinion & what you want/expect from a car. You would have to test drive one yourself but I will say that it's the comfiest car I've ever had, the seats are like comfy sofas, long trips are a doddle... I did North Midlands to Cornwall a couple of years ago with one 20 min stop & got out as fresh as a daisy.

If you're looking for one then look for a higher power petrol from 2004 on, pre 2004 Saab engines were prone to oil sludge if regular oil changes with good synthetic oil were neglected.
Modifications were made on the 2004 models which pretty much eradicated the problem.

The 9-5 or 9-3 Aero manual models would be top of my list but look for a good one with service history & test drive... they're quirky & don't suit everyone :)

VW Lupo SDI is now up to 150k miles. I average about 69MPG. No maintenance since the last time I was here other than tyres.

£1000, 60k miles of use in two years. Bangernomics at its finest.

Think I'd posted previously about my sons bangernomics, first car, 04 plate 1.2 Clio for £900.
In for it's mot today, emissions didnt look good (0.2 max reading was around 12, 200 max reading was around 1500)
Think they hold it at a certain number of revs for a second test if it fails at first, both readings fell enough to pass.
Failed on 2 trackrod ends and a power steering gaitor, so quite happy with the result. Parts sourced for £26 so £66 all in.

Hubby had a 1998 Xsara with the same engine, and it went on to just under 450,000 miles when someone crashed into it.
He had it for about a year with only needing 2 tyres in that time,

Still not entirely sure what to do about my cambelt. Will probably be about £250 on a car worth £500. Hmm. I absolutely need a car for work, it is worth the risk? It could die by other means the day after...

Our approach is "what will it cost to replace the car"
If we could replace the car for the cost of the work we wouldn't do the work, if the work is cheaper than a new car then we do the work.

With buying another £500 car it's just as likely to need work or breakdown, but at least you know the existing car
  • I had the same quandary with my CrapOldToyota - car book value was basically what it was worth in scrap, but a cambelt was going to cost me Eu250. I bit the bullet and paid up. Still got the car, it's still running fine, and will carry on for years yet. It's laid up off the road at the moment, but not for mechanical reasons. I'll put it back into use at some point, none the worse for wear.
It kind of annoyed me, having to pay someone else to do the work, but my back is just not up to doing a cambelt in a restricted space, not any more.

Poking my head in to register myself for the 'bangernomics' club. Grabbed myself a 51 reg Ford Focus, today. Grand total? £200

It needs an MOT in a week, but i fully expect it to pass (it just needs a new tire, really)

This is my first car in 5 years, so i'm a very happy boy!

Edit: Any advice on where / how to source cheap tires?
