£67.50 once housing costs and council tax are removed is liveable on if you don't have debts.
The problem people have is when they have credit commitments or contractual agreements and that is where they encounter trouble, if they haven't put anything aside in case of unemployment.
Indeed. £67.50 is actually far, far more than I live on weekly.Said Aristippus, “If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils.”
Said Diogenes, “Learn to live on lentils and you will not have to be subservient to the king.”0 -
From the Shelter uk website
http://england.shelter.org.uk/get_advice/paying_for_a_home/housing_benefit_and_local_housing_allowance/housing_benefit_if_renting_from_a_family_member#0
No wonder people become homeless!!!
I live with other family members
If you are (or your partner is) renting a home from a close family member who shares all or part of the home with you, you won’t get housing benefit, even if you are paying them rent. This applies if you are renting from a:- parent or step-parent
- father-in-law or mother-in-law
- child or step-child
- son-in-law or daughter-in-law
- brother or sister (including half-brothers and half-sisters)
- brother-in-law or sister-in-law
- partner of any of the above.
Can you not see the financial implications for the state if you could receive HB/LHA whilst living with family?
With a welfare state costing £202bn a year and NI receipts at £90bn and income tax at £160bn there has to be some restrictions.0 -

Get some FACTS behind any assumtions you have first eh.
I could always move out and claim housing benefit I guess and then come and spend the day here so I have to pay no electricity in the day, eat here and then go back to the paid housing.............hmmm what an idea!!!0 -
You have said here you do not believe I only get JSA!!

I never said you get benefits other than JSA, only that many other claimants receive more than £67.50.
If you are unsure of your entitlements then your first port of call should be a welfare benefits expert, they might have advised you regarding the NHS low income scheme for a start.0 -

You seem obsessed with the NHS low income scheme. People get free NHS care on JSA income based anyway......0 -
LadyMissA.
You may not get £100's per week but thousands and thousands do! They get this amount because they are clever, not stupid. These are the ones that know how to play the system.
Why don't I have 4 or 5 kids? why did we stick at 2? I'm going to tell you, because I cannot afford it thats why. If you are going to read a topic such as this be warned that there are going to be debates and answers we all do not agree with.
I'll tell you what p***** me off shall I. I and my wife have worked to feed cloth our kids so they grow up to hopefully follow our shadows. Now, when my daughter left school she could not go to college, do you know why? becaus ewe could not afford it! But some of her 'friends' were allowed to go to college, do you know why? It was all free for them. Their parents were on as much as us. We bring home around £23,000 per year both myself and my wife works. However there are families on more than this and can get free education fees free buses which would have cost me £300 per year. Who is the fools here? Why should my daughter miss out on education because we cant afford it when we work our !!!!!! off, yet families who do nothing who get more than us can send their kids to further education colleges for nothing.
LadymissA, I ask you, is that right?
A serious question, would you encourage your daughter to follow the "clever path" that you have quoted, i.e. become a young Mum and live the easy life you are quoting? I ask as someone in similar circumstances to you, earning what I thought to be good money, £35k, only to find JSA would have paid more, with the free housing and stuff. Thanks to sites like "entitled to" it is easy to see just how much is paid out to non working families with children, it does kill the £67.50 a week myth!
I ask because like any parent I want the best for my kids, but I'm not sure that competing with 5-600 other school leavers to get a NMW job in the local shop/factory is going to provide that.0 -

No I would not I wouldnt want any of my kids to sit on the bums all day doing nothing. My daughter was out of work for a few months and had to claim benefits but I made her look for jobs even got her interviews without asking her!
I'm going to tell you something too which is true. The job centre even advised her to get pregnant. Now then thats true. Well the unemployed keep them in work.
If you are clever at being stupid you can play the system and get more money than you would working, this is why the unemployment system needs looking at in a practicle way. I tell you if I was in charge of the unemployed I would have then out working for the job seekers allowance. I would make the actively search for work even if this meant going to employers and asking for interviews. Get the unemployed to provide proof they are out looking. And there is a sure why of finding out if this works
Check the daily ratings of Jeremy Kyle viewing figures. All the big powers they've silenced me. So much for free speech and choice on this fundamental human right, and outing the liars.0 -

.
Are you deliberately being stupid?
Work prog- those who don't appear to do enough to look for work are placed at Tesco (who are cutting paid hours of their staff) to work for 2 weeks for their benefit.
When you sign on you are required to provide evidence of job searches, if not deemed to have done enough claimant can be monitored closely, sent for training or even sanctioned.
On a jobseekers agreement a requirement is to look for work, visit employers and apply for jobs therefore 'asking for an interview'
So you would just do everything that is being done already, well done.0 -
This is because many youngsters when they enroll to university they have been told to study what they like. Not to take a degree that allow them to easily find the job in the future when they finish uni...
They end up study which is easy to pass and get degree. Not many want to study Engineering, Science, Dentistry, Medicine as they need to put too much efforts on it.
Finishing mickey mouse degrees they end up working in the low skill job which eventually does not need degree as they will not be able to find job as there are not enough job in those areas ...
In my opinion when parent's give advice to their teens they need to encourage them to take degrees which are likely to allow them the easily find the job in the future, not what the teens would like to do.They are screaming!
There are not enough of the right type of employees together with the inability of some that can't even read or write properly despite having 11 years of paid for education.
You only have to look on some of the private employment agencies websites. They are crying out for qualified engineers, lawyers, accountants, scientists etc.
We have a mis match of abilities v employer requirements.
Hence the reason they are having to bring staff in from abroad.0
